Align your degree to the role
USCIS evaluates whether your degree field directly relates to Senior Consultant duties. A business administration or finance degree maps cleanly, but an unrelated major requires a strong equivalency argument built into your employer's H-1B petition.
Verify LCA wage level before accepting
Your employer's Labor Condition Application locks in your wage level. Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm your offered salary meets at least Level II prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location before signing an offer.
Target consulting firms with cap-exempt affiliations
Consulting firms contracted primarily with universities or nonprofits may qualify as cap-exempt, letting you start anytime without waiting for the October 1 lottery date. Ask potential employers directly whether their H-1B filings are cap-subject or cap-exempt.
Search employer H-1B filing history on Migrate Mate
Filter Senior Consultant roles by employers with verified DOL Labor Condition Application records on Migrate Mate, so you target companies that have already sponsored this job title rather than those that only say they're open to it.
Request premium processing before your OPT expires
If you're on OPT, premium processing cuts USCIS review to 15 business days. Without it, a standard-processing approval that arrives after your OPT end date leaves you in an unauthorized work gap even if the petition is ultimately approved.
Check the O*NET profile for your specialty argument
Senior Consultant spans multiple industries, and USCIS scrutinizes broad job titles. Pull the O*NET occupation profile for your specific consulting track and use its degree requirements to strengthen your employer's specialty occupation documentation.
H-1B Visa Senior Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. USCIS requires that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific related field. Generic consulting titles face more scrutiny, so your employer's petition needs to document that a particular degree field, not just any bachelor's degree, is required for your specific duties.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most consistently for Senior Consultants?
Management consulting, IT consulting, financial advisory, and healthcare consulting firms appear most frequently in DOL LCA disclosure data for this job title. Firms that staff large enterprise or government contracts tend to have established H-1B sponsorship processes. You can browse Senior Consultant roles filtered by LCA filing history on Migrate Mate to identify these employers directly.
Can my employer transfer my H-1B to a different consulting engagement or client site?
Yes, but each new work location may require an amended LCA if it falls outside the metropolitan statistical area covered in the original filing. Your employer must file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS before you begin work at the new site, unless the location change is temporary and covered under short-term placement rules.
What happens to my H-1B if my consulting firm loses a client contract and my project ends?
Your H-1B status ties to your employer, not the specific project. If your firm keeps you on payroll, your status remains valid. If your employment ends, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsoring employer, transfer your H-1B through portability, or depart. USCIS does not extend the grace period for project-based gaps.
Do consulting firms typically cover H-1B filing fees, or is that negotiated?
USCIS prohibits employers from passing certain mandatory H-1B fees to the employee, including the base filing fee and the fraud prevention and detection fee. Premium processing fees are negotiable. Attorney fees vary by firm. Clarify which costs your employer covers during the offer stage, before your LCA is filed, to avoid surprises at petition time.
