Verify your SOC code before applying
Senior Test Automation Engineer roles are typically filed under SOC 15-1253 (Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers). Confirm job postings align with this classification before applying, mismatched SOC codes can complicate your LCA and I-129 filing.
Check employer LCA history on Migrate Mate
Search Migrate Mate's employer profiles to see which companies have filed LCAs specifically for QA and test automation roles. This filters out employers who sponsor broadly but haven't actually filed for your occupation code.
Document your automation stack in your resume
USCIS scrutinizes specialty occupation status for QA roles. A resume that explicitly lists your frameworks, Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, pytest, alongside degree-level reasoning strengthens your employer's petition and reduces RFE risk.
Target E-Verify enrolled employers early
If you're on OPT or cap-gap, your employer must be E-Verify enrolled to maintain your work authorization during the H-1B transition. Filter your search to E-Verify participants before investing time in the interview process.
Use the OFLC Wage Search to benchmark before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing wage for your SOC code and work location. Run the OFLC Wage Search before salary negotiations so you know the DOL floor and can assess whether an offer is LCA-compliant.
Request premium processing if your timeline is tight
Standard H-1B adjudication can run several months. If you're approaching the end of OPT or a grace period, ask your employer to file Form I-907 for premium processing, USCIS commits to a 15-business-day decision on the I-129.
H-1B Visa Senior Test Automation Engineer: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Test Automation Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, in most cases. USCIS requires the position to normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field, such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles focused on scripting frameworks, CI/CD pipeline integration, and enterprise QA architecture typically meet this threshold. Roles where any general degree is accepted may face a specialty occupation RFE.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for test automation roles?
Financial services, enterprise software, healthcare IT, and large e-commerce platforms file the most H-1B LCAs for QA and test automation positions. These industries maintain dedicated QA engineering teams and have established H-1B filing workflows. You can identify active sponsors for your specific occupation code using Migrate Mate, which surfaces employer LCA filing history by job category.
Can a Senior Test Automation Engineer role be filed as cap-exempt?
Only if the employer qualifies as cap-exempt, meaning a higher education institution, a nonprofit affiliated with one, or a government research organization. The role itself doesn't determine cap-exempt status. Most private-sector employers filing for this title are cap-subject, so you'll need to go through the H-1B lottery unless you're transferring an approved petition from a previous cap year.
What happens to my H-1B status if I change employers and the new role involves different automation tools or responsibilities?
A material change in job duties requires your new employer to file an amended I-129 with USCIS, even if the job title stays the same. Shifting from manual-plus-automation QA to a fully automated pipeline role, or moving into a test architecture or DevOps-adjacent function, can constitute a material change. Your new employer's immigration counsel should assess whether an amendment is needed before you start.
How do I find employers actively sponsoring H-1B visas for Senior Test Automation Engineers?
The most direct method is reviewing DOL LCA disclosure data filtered by SOC code 15-1253 and job title. This shows which employers have recently certified wages for QA and test automation positions, confirming they've actively filed rather than just claiming they sponsor visas. Migrate Mate aggregates this data so you can search by role and employer without downloading raw disclosure files.
