Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Strategy Consultant
Verify your degree field matches the role
USCIS requires your degree to align directly with the specialty occupation. A strategy consulting role typically maps to business administration, economics, or management. A degree in an unrelated field increases your RFE risk significantly.
Check LCA filings before applying
Use the OFLC Wage Search to confirm a firm has filed Labor Condition Applications for Strategy Consultant or Management Analyst roles. Employers without recent LCA history for this occupation may lack the internal process to sponsor you.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter by occupation and filing history on Migrate Mate to identify employers with active H-1B sponsorship patterns for consulting roles. This surfaces firms that sponsor consistently, not just those with a one-time filing on record.
Negotiate petition timing before accepting an offer
Cap-subject H-1B petitions must be filed for the October 1 start date, so an offer in January differs from one in July. Confirm your start date aligns with your employer's filing window before signing.
Understand how project-based work affects your petition
Strategy consulting roles often involve client deployments across multiple sites. USCIS scrutinizes third-party placement arrangements, so your employer should document that they control your day-to-day work in the I-129 petition.
Use O*NET to support your specialty occupation case
The O*NET profile for Management Analysts (SOC 13-1111) lists education and skill requirements that directly support an H-1B specialty occupation argument. Your employer's attorney can cite this profile in the petition to preempt RFEs.
H-1B Visa Strategy Consultant: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Strategy Consultant role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field such as business, economics, finance, or management. Generic job postings that list a degree as preferred rather than required can weaken the case. Your employer should document the theoretical and practical application of specialized knowledge in the role description submitted with the I-129.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Strategy Consultants?
Large management consulting firms, financial institutions, and technology companies with dedicated strategy functions are the most consistent sponsors. Boutique consulting firms sponsor less frequently because they may lack in-house immigration infrastructure. To find employers with verified H-1B filing histories for consulting roles, browse by occupation on Migrate Mate, which surfaces LCA data by job title and employer.
How does client-site deployment affect my H-1B status as a consultant?
If your employer places you at client sites for extended periods, USCIS may scrutinize whether your employer genuinely controls your work. The employer must maintain the right to supervise, assign tasks, and terminate your engagement. If your firm places you at a third-party client location for the duration of a project, the petition should include itinerary documentation and employer control evidence to reduce the risk of an RFE or denial.
Can I switch consulting employers while on H-1B status?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file an H-1B transfer petition on your behalf, as long as your current petition has been approved and you've maintained valid status. You don't need to wait for the transfer to be approved before your start date, which matters in fast-moving consulting offer timelines.
What happens to my H-1B if my consulting project ends and I'm between engagements?
Your H-1B status is tied to your employer, not to a specific client project. If you remain on payroll between engagements, your status is maintained. However, if your employer terminates you, you have a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, file a change of status, or depart the U.S. Document your bench periods carefully and keep pay stubs as evidence of continuous employment if USCIS ever requests proof.
