Verify your degree field matches
H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct relationship between your degree and the Support Lead role. A general business degree may not satisfy USCIS if the job description centers on technical systems or software, a computer science or information systems degree strengthens your petition significantly.
Check prevailing wage before negotiating
Look up the wage level for your specific Support Lead SOC code and work location using the OFLC Wage Search before you enter salary discussions. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above that level, so knowing it prevents offers that can't clear DOL filing.
Search employers with active LCA filing history
Target companies that have already filed LCAs for Support Lead or similar technical operations titles. Use Migrate Mate to filter employers by occupation and filing history so you're applying to organizations with a demonstrated H-1B sponsorship process, not discovering their policy after an offer.
Clarify supervisory scope in your job offer
Support Lead titles vary widely, some are individual contributor roles, others manage teams. Make sure your offer letter and job description reflect supervisory duties or senior technical responsibilities. A clearly scoped role reduces the risk of a specialty occupation challenge from USCIS during adjudication.
Time your application around the cap and lottery
H-1B cap-subject petitions must be filed in the April window for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT and your current authorization expires before October, confirm your employer can support a cap-gap extension so you're authorized to keep working through the transition.
Request premium processing for faster certainty
Support Lead roles often come with onboarding timelines that can't slip by months. Ask your employer to file with premium processing through USCIS, which guarantees a decision within 15 business days and lets both sides plan your start date without uncertainty hanging over the offer.
H-1B Visa Support Lead: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Support Lead role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is defined. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. Support Lead roles at enterprise software, SaaS, or infrastructure companies typically qualify when the job description requires technical expertise in a defined discipline like computer science or information systems. Generic support management positions without a field-specific degree requirement are more likely to face a request for evidence.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most frequently for Support Lead positions?
Enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, financial technology, and telecommunications companies file the highest volume of LCAs for technical support leadership roles. These industries commonly require Support Leads to manage complex integrations, escalations, or platform-specific implementations where a technical degree is a genuine prerequisite. You can browse employers with active H-1B filing history for these roles on Migrate Mate before applying.
Can my employer start my H-1B petition while I'm on OPT as a Support Lead?
Yes. If your OPT is still valid when the H-1B lottery opens in March, your employer can file a cap-subject petition for an October 1 start. If your OPT expires between April and September 30 and your petition is selected, the cap-gap rule automatically extends your work authorization through the end of that period. Confirm with your employer that they're prepared to file on your behalf during the registration window.
What SOC code applies to Support Lead roles for DOL prevailing wage purposes?
Most Support Lead positions map to SOC 15-1232 (Computer User Support Specialists) or 11-3021 (Computer and Information Systems Managers), depending on how supervisory the role is. The correct code affects the prevailing wage level your employer must certify on the LCA, so it's worth reviewing the O*NET occupation profile for your specific duties and confirming the code with your employer before the LCA is filed.
Can a Support Lead transfer their H-1B to a new employer mid-year?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you start working for a new employer as soon as they file a transfer petition, without waiting for approval, as long as your current H-1B is valid and you've been in lawful status. For Support Lead roles, the new employer must file a new LCA certified at the prevailing wage for your work location and confirm the position still meets specialty occupation standards.
