Map your credentials to USCIS specialty occupation
Pull your O*NET profile for Systems Security Engineer and confirm your degree field maps directly to the role. USCIS scrutinizes degree-to-job-duty alignment in cybersecurity petitions, so a mismatch between your transcript and the job description is the fastest path to an RFE.
Check LCA wage levels before accepting offers
Run the OFLC Wage Search for your specific job title and work location before signing anything. Employers filing at Level I may be underpaying relative to your experience, which creates both a legal wage compliance risk and a signal that the role may not survive USCIS adjudication.
Target employers with cleared-facility security programs
Defense contractors and federal IT vendors sponsor H-1B workers for Systems Security Engineer roles at high rates because the work is jurisdiction-specific and can't easily be offshored. Search Migrate Mate to filter employers with active H-1B LCA filing history in this occupation.
Confirm E-Verify enrollment before your start date
If you're transitioning from OPT, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify to authorize STEM OPT extensions. Systems security roles at government contractors are almost always E-Verify-enrolled, but verify this directly with HR before your cap-gap or extension period begins.
Request premium processing for security clearance timelines
Background investigation timelines for cleared Systems Security Engineer roles can stretch six to twelve months. Filing I-129 with premium processing at USCIS gives you an approved status faster, letting your employer initiate clearance adjudication without waiting on visa approval first.
Document technical specialization to reduce RFE risk
USCIS issues RFEs on Systems Security Engineer petitions when job duties read as generalist IT work rather than specialized security engineering. Your offer letter and LCA job description should name specific frameworks, such as NIST, SIEM platforms, or zero-trust architecture, to anchor the specialty occupation argument.

Find Systems Security Engineer JobsSystems Security Engineer H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Systems Security Engineer role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes. Systems Security Engineer falls under computer and mathematical occupations, which USCIS consistently recognizes as specialty occupations. The key requirement is that the position normally requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field, such as computer science, information security, or cybersecurity. Generalist IT roles can fail this test, so the job description needs to specify technical duties tied to that degree field.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Systems Security Engineer roles?
Defense contractors, federal IT services firms, financial institutions, and large technology companies are the most active H-1B sponsors for Systems Security Engineer positions because the work requires deep technical specialization that's difficult to source domestically on short timelines. You can search Migrate Mate to find employers with verified H-1B LCA filing history specifically in this occupation, rather than relying on general employer reputation.
How does a security clearance interact with H-1B sponsorship for this role?
H-1B status itself doesn't disqualify you from a clearance investigation, but many cleared Systems Security Engineer positions require U.S. citizenship at the Secret or above level, which H-1B holders don't hold. Roles requiring only a Public Trust or Tier 1 investigation are generally open to H-1B workers with lawful permanent resident status or certain nonimmigrant statuses. Confirm the clearance requirement with the employer before investing in the petition process.
What happens to my H-1B status if my employer loses a government contract?
If your employer's contract ends and your position is eliminated, your H-1B status becomes invalid even if the visa stamp remains unexpired. You have a 60-day grace period under USCIS rules to find a new sponsoring employer, file a change of status, or depart the U.S. Systems Security Engineers with cleared backgrounds or active certifications like CISSP typically find this transition faster than generalist roles because demand is concentrated among a smaller set of cleared employers.
Can my employer file H-1B for a remote Systems Security Engineer position?
Yes, but the employer must file a separate Labor Condition Application for each worksite where you'll perform services for more than 30 days in a year, including your home address if you're fully remote. DOL requires the LCA to cover every physical location, not just the employer's headquarters. If your work location changes after approval, your employer may need to file an amended I-129 with USCIS depending on whether the change is material.
