Verify your SOC code before applying
Network Systems Administrator maps to SOC 15-1244 in the O*NET database. Confirm your target employers are filing LCAs under this code, not a broader or mismatched classification that could weaken your H-1B specialty occupation argument.
Check prevailing wage levels on OFLC Wage Search
Pull the Level I through Level IV wage rates for SOC 15-1244 in your target metro area. Offers at Level I signal entry-level framing, which draws more USCIS scrutiny on specialty occupation eligibility for network administration roles.
Target employers with active E-Verify enrollment
H-1B employers are required to be E-Verify participants. Filter your search on Migrate Mate to companies with verified LCA filing history for network and systems roles, so you're not wasting applications on employers unfamiliar with the process.
Document hybrid networking and cloud experience separately
USCIS RFEs for network administrator petitions frequently challenge whether the role requires a specific bachelor's degree. Build a portfolio that links your cloud architecture or SD-WAN work directly to degree-level coursework, not just years of experience.
Ask about cap-exempt status during offer negotiations
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated entities are cap-exempt H-1B employers. A network administrator role at a qualifying institution lets you file outside the annual lottery, significantly reducing time-to-start.
Align your offer letter language with the I-129 petition
The job duties described in your offer letter must mirror the I-129 and LCA exactly. Vague titles like 'IT generalist' create inconsistencies that adjudicators flag. Request that your employer use the specific SOC 15-1244 job title and duty language in all documents.
H-1B Visa Network Systems Administrator: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Network Systems Administrator role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the employer requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific field such as computer science, information systems, or network engineering as a minimum for the position. USCIS evaluates specialty occupation on a case-by-case basis, so the offer letter and job description must clearly establish that a theoretical and practical application of highly specialized knowledge is required, not just general IT troubleshooting skills.
Which employers sponsor H-1B visas for Network Systems Administrator positions?
Employers across technology, healthcare, financial services, higher education, and federal contracting regularly sponsor H-1B petitions for network and systems administration roles. Cap-exempt employers such as universities and nonprofit research organizations can file outside the annual lottery. Migrate Mate filters employers by verified LCA filing history, so you can identify which companies have actively sponsored roles in this occupation category.
Can a Network Systems Administrator be sponsored for an H-1B without a four-year degree?
USCIS allows a combination of education and work experience to satisfy the bachelor's degree equivalency requirement, using a three-to-one ratio where three years of specialized experience substitutes for one year of college. For SOC 15-1244 roles, the experience must be in a directly related specialty, not general IT support. An educational credential evaluation from a NACES-member organization is typically required to document this equivalency for the I-129 petition.
What documents should I prepare before an employer files an H-1B petition for this role?
You'll need certified academic transcripts, a credential evaluation if your degree is from outside the U.S., a copy of your current I-94 record, and any previously approved I-129 or EAD documentation. Your employer will need to file an LCA with DOL before submitting the I-129 to USCIS. Having a detailed resume that maps your technical skills directly to degree-level coursework reduces the risk of a Request for Evidence challenging specialty occupation status.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my chances of getting sponsored for a Network Systems Administrator role?
H-1B petitions subject to the annual cap enter a random computerized lottery, with 65,000 slots available under the regular cap and an additional 20,000 reserved for U.S. master's degree holders. If your role is with a cap-exempt employer, no lottery applies and your employer can file at any time. Registration for the cap-subject lottery typically opens in March for an October 1 start date, so your job search timeline needs to account for this annual cycle.
