H-1B Visa Technical Representative Jobs
Technical Representative roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship when the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or a related technical field. Employers file the LCA with DOL before petitioning USCIS, and the 85,000-slot annual cap means timing your job search around the April lottery window matters.

Verify your degree matches the role
USCIS requires that your degree field directly relates to the Technical Representative duties listed in the job description. A general business degree rarely satisfies specialty occupation requirements for technical client-facing roles tied to engineering or software products.
Check employer LCA filings by job code
Technical Representative roles are typically filed under SOC codes like 41-4011 or 17-3023. Run the OFLC Wage Search filtered to those codes to confirm an employer has certified LCAs for this title before you apply.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofit research organizations, and government-related entities are exempt from the 85,000-slot H-1B cap. Technical Representative roles at these institutions can be filed any time of year, bypassing the April lottery entirely.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified sponsors
Search Migrate Mate for Technical Representative openings filtered by verified H-1B filing history. Employers shown have actual DOL Labor Condition Application records for this role, so you're not guessing about sponsorship willingness before you apply.
Get your offer letter before October 1st
H-1B employment can't begin until October 1 of the fiscal year you're selected in. Secure your offer and petition approval before that date, or negotiate a delayed start date with your employer to stay compliant with your authorized status.
Document technical duties beyond sales tasks
USCIS scrutinizes Technical Representative petitions that look primarily like sales roles. Your offer letter and supporting documentation should detail the engineering analysis, product troubleshooting, or system integration work that justifies the specialty occupation classification.
H-1B Visa Technical Representative: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Representative role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. USCIS requires that the position normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific technical field. If your job description emphasizes complex engineering support, technical implementation, or systems analysis and ties those duties to a specific degree field, it qualifies. Roles framed primarily around sales outreach face higher scrutiny and are more likely to receive a Request for Evidence.
Which SOC code do employers typically use for Technical Representative H-1B petitions?
Employers commonly file under SOC 41-4011 (Sales Representatives, Technical and Scientific Products) or SOC 17-3023 (Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians), depending on the actual duties. The SOC code affects the prevailing wage level DOL certifies on the LCA, so the code choice has direct consequences for your offered salary and the petition's compliance. You can review how employers have classified similar roles using the OFLC Wage Search or the O*NET occupation profile.
How do I find employers that sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Representative positions?
Search Migrate Mate for Technical Representative roles filtered by verified H-1B filing history. This surfaces employers that have certified Labor Condition Applications with DOL for this job title, rather than companies that only sponsor certain roles or handle cases ad hoc. Targeting employers with an established H-1B track record for technical sales and support positions significantly reduces the risk of a sponsorship falling through after an offer.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B while working as a Technical Representative?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as the new H-1B transfer petition is filed with USCIS, provided your current H-1B has been approved and you've been maintaining valid status. The new employer files an I-129 petition with a new LCA certified for the Technical Representative duties at their location. You don't need to wait for USCIS approval before starting.
What documentation should I gather before an employer files my H-1B petition for a Technical Representative role?
Prepare your official transcripts and degree certificates, a detailed resume with technical duties listed, and any certifications relevant to the products or systems you'll support. If your degree title doesn't exactly match the role's technical area, gather evidence of coursework or continuing education that bridges the gap. Employers also need your passport, current visa documentation, and I-94 record. Having these organized before the LCA filing stage keeps the petition timeline on track for the April cap season.
