Verify your degree matches the role
Technical Support Specialist petitions require a specialty occupation showing your degree directly relates to the job duties. If your degree is in a general field like business, prepare documentation connecting your coursework to IT systems, networking, or the specific technical domain the role covers.
Target employers with E-Verify enrollment
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be E-Verify enrolled, and many H-1B sponsors already are. Filtering for E-Verify-registered companies in technical support cuts out employers who can't bridge your OPT to an H-1B cap-gap period.
Check prevailing wage before accepting offers
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the prevailing wage for Technical Support Specialist roles in your metro area before you negotiate. Your offer must meet the DOL wage level your employer certifies on the LCA, so knowing the floor protects you from underpayment issues at filing.
Search verified H-1B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Filter Technical Support Specialist openings by employers with documented H-1B LCA filing history on Migrate Mate. This shows you which companies have actually sponsored the role before, not just which ones claim to be open to sponsorship during interviews.
Ask about cap-exempt employer options
Universities, nonprofit research institutions, and certain government-affiliated organizations are cap-exempt, meaning you can file an H-1B petition any time of year without entering the lottery. Technical support roles at hospital systems or research universities often qualify and are worth targeting if you've already used your lottery registration.
File premium processing if your start date is tight
If your OPT expires close to October 1, premium processing gets USCIS to adjudicate your I-129 within 15 business days. Confirm your employer is willing to cover or split the cost during offer negotiation, before the petition is drafted.
H-1B Visa Technical Support Specialist: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Support Specialist role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the employer defines the role. USCIS requires the position to normally require a bachelor's degree in a specific field like computer science, information systems, or engineering. Generic helpdesk roles with no degree requirement won't qualify, but mid- to senior-level technical support positions tied to complex software platforms or enterprise infrastructure generally do. The employer's job description and internal requirements carry significant weight in adjudication.
Which industries sponsor H-1B visas most often for Technical Support Specialists?
Software companies, managed service providers, healthcare IT vendors, and cloud infrastructure firms file LCAs for Technical Support Specialists with regularity. Enterprise software companies that deploy complex systems often need degreed specialists on-site or remotely. You can browse employers with verified H-1B filing history for this role on Migrate Mate, filtered by industry and location.
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new employer if I change technical support jobs?
Yes. Under H-1B portability rules established by AC21, you can start working for a new employer as soon as they file a new I-129 petition on your behalf, as long as your prior H-1B was approved and you've been in valid status. The new employer files independently; your previous employer's petition doesn't need to be withdrawn first.
What happens to my H-1B status if my technical support role shifts to remote work in a different state?
Your employer must file a new LCA with DOL for each new work location, including permanent remote arrangements, because prevailing wages are tied to the work site's metropolitan area. If the new location has a higher DOL wage level than what's certified on your current LCA, your employer may need to amend your H-1B petition with USCIS before you begin working from that location.
How does the H-1B lottery affect my timeline as a Technical Support Specialist job seeker?
USCIS opens H-1B registrations each March for a lottery that selects from the 65,000 regular cap plus 20,000 advanced-degree exemption slots. If selected, your employer can file the full I-129 petition starting April 1 for an October 1 start date. If you're on OPT when October 1 arrives and your petition is pending or approved, the cap-gap rule extends your work authorization automatically until adjudication.
