Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship in Technology Lead
Map your role to the right SOC code
USCIS scrutinizes whether a Technology Lead role meets specialty occupation standards. Pull the O*NET profile for your specific SOC code before applying so you can frame your experience around the degree requirements listed there.
Target employers with cap-exempt status
Universities, nonprofits affiliated with research institutions, and certain government contractors can file H-1B petitions outside the annual lottery. Search OFLC disclosure data for Technology Lead LCA filings at cap-exempt organizations to find roles that don't depend on lottery selection.
Verify prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing rate for your location and SOC code. Run the OFLC Wage Search for your target metro before salary discussions so you know whether an offer legally clears the threshold.
Use Migrate Mate to find verified H-1B sponsors
Filter Technology Lead openings on Migrate Mate by employers with confirmed LCA filing history for your occupation code. That surfaces companies that have already cleared the DOL certification step, not just firms that say they're open to sponsorship.
Get your I-129 petition filed early in the fiscal year
For cap-subject roles, H-1B registration opens in March and USCIS typically reaches the cap within the first five days. Confirm your employer's timeline for submitting registration and petition documents so delays on their end don't cost you a lottery slot.
Document your technical leadership scope precisely
USCIS RFEs on Technology Lead petitions often challenge whether the role genuinely requires a specialized degree. Provide an org chart, a breakdown of architectural decisions you own, and any cross-functional scope that distinguishes your position from a general software engineer role.
H-1B Visa Technology Lead: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technology Lead role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, provided the position requires at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, software engineering, or information systems. Roles where any bachelor's degree would suffice can draw RFEs from USCIS. Your employer's job description should specify the degree field, not just a degree level, to satisfy the specialty occupation definition.
How do I find Technology Lead jobs where the employer already sponsors H-1B visas?
Migrate Mate filters Technology Lead openings by verified LCA filing history, so you can see which employers have already filed with the DOL for this occupation rather than guessing at sponsorship willingness. That's a more reliable signal than a job posting that simply says 'visa sponsorship available.'
Can I transfer my H-1B to a new Technology Lead role without going back into the lottery?
Yes. H-1B portability under AC21 lets you change employers once your petition has been pending for 180 days or is already approved, as long as the new role is in the same or a similar occupational classification. A Technology Lead position at a new company typically qualifies if your SOC code stays consistent. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition with USCIS before or when you start.
What happens to my H-1B if I'm promoted from a senior engineer to Technology Lead at the same company?
A significant change in job duties, title, or work location requires your employer to file an amended H-1B petition with USCIS and a new LCA with DOL before the change takes effect. Moving into a Technology Lead role typically triggers this requirement because the responsibilities and prevailing wage level shift materially from an individual contributor position.
How does the H-1B prevailing wage requirement affect Technology Lead hiring?
DOL requires your employer's LCA to certify a wage at or above the prevailing rate for your SOC code and work location, published quarterly through the OFLC Wage Search. Technology Lead roles generally fall into wage level III or IV, which are the higher tiers. Employers who can't meet that threshold legally cannot file the LCA, so confirming wage compliance early filters out offers that will stall at the DOL stage.
