H-1B Visa Volunteer Coordinator Jobs
Volunteer Coordinator roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship when the position requires a bachelor's degree in social work, nonprofit management, public administration, or a related field. Nonprofits, universities, and large healthcare systems are the most active sponsors. The annual H-1B cap and lottery apply, so timing your job search around the April filing window matters.

We are a tight-knit community of healers who witness the impact of our life-changing work each day.
Each day, we are closing the gaps in access to care. We are innovating through leading-edge research, testing, programs, and treatment modalities that others replicate across the country. Our services include a state-of-the-art psychiatric urgent care center and a soon-to-be-built pediatric behavioral health center, outpatient, inpatient, partial hospitalization (day programs), assessment and testing, residential, addiction treatment and specialty services such as crisis response, employee assistance programs, forensic psychiatry and psychology, and neuromodulation. Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding H-1B Visa Sponsorship as a Volunteer Coordinator
Document your degree's direct relevance
USCIS scrutinizes Volunteer Coordinator petitions because the role isn't always seen as requiring a specific degree. Gather syllabi, transcripts, and a credential evaluation showing your degree directly maps to volunteer management, community organizing, or nonprofit administration.
Target cap-exempt employers first
Universities, teaching hospitals, and nonprofit research organizations are cap-exempt, meaning your H-1B petition can be filed any time of year without entering the lottery. These institutions also hire Volunteer Coordinators regularly and have established HR processes for sponsorship.
Search verified sponsors on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to filter Volunteer Coordinator roles by employers with confirmed H-1B LCA filing history, so you're applying to organizations that have already demonstrated willingness to sponsor rather than guessing from job postings.
Request a specialty occupation support letter
Ask your prospective employer to document why the Volunteer Coordinator role specifically requires a degree, not just prefers one. A strong employer support letter addressing the specialty occupation definition is one of the most effective ways to reduce RFE risk on this job title.
Verify the prevailing wage before negotiating
Look up the SOC code for your role using the OFLC Wage Search before salary discussions. The employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the DOL prevailing wage, so knowing the threshold protects you from offers that can't legally support an H-1B filing.
Align your job offer timing with the lottery window
H-1B registrations open in March for an October 1 start date. If you receive an offer from a cap-subject employer in May, you'll wait nearly a year for the next lottery. Target offers between October and February to maximize your lead time before registration opens.

Find Volunteer Coordinator JobsVolunteer Coordinator H-1B Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Volunteer Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can, but it requires careful documentation. USCIS looks for evidence that the role normally requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field like social work, nonprofit management, or public administration. A generic job description listing a degree as preferred rather than required will often trigger a Request for Evidence. Your employer needs to make a clear, written case that the duties are degree-dependent.
Which types of employers sponsor H-1B visas for Volunteer Coordinator positions?
Universities, large hospital systems, and established nonprofits are the most consistent sponsors for this role. They have dedicated HR and legal teams familiar with H-1B filings and are often cap-exempt, which removes the lottery barrier entirely. Smaller community nonprofits rarely sponsor because of cost and administrative complexity, so your search should prioritize larger, mission-driven institutions. Migrate Mate lets you filter by employers with verified LCA filing history in this role category.
Can a nonprofit sponsor my H-1B as a Volunteer Coordinator?
Yes. Nonprofits affiliated with universities or engaged in nonprofit research are cap-exempt and can file H-1B petitions at any time. Other nonprofits are cap-subject and must go through the annual lottery. In either case, the nonprofit must file a Labor Condition Application with the DOL and pay the required USCIS filing fees, which can be a barrier for smaller organizations with tight budgets.
What SOC code applies to Volunteer Coordinator roles for the LCA?
Volunteer Coordinators are most commonly classified under SOC 11-9151 (Social and Community Service Managers) or 13-1151 (Training and Development Specialists), depending on the specific duties. The O*NET profile for each code describes the typical degree requirements and job tasks. The employer and their attorney choose the SOC code when filing the LCA with DOL, and that choice affects the prevailing wage level your offer must meet.
What happens to my H-1B status if my sponsoring employer's funding is cut or the role is eliminated?
Your H-1B status is tied to that specific employer and role. If the position is eliminated, you enter a 60-day grace period to find a new sponsor, change to another visa status, or depart the U.S. The new employer must file a new H-1B transfer petition before the grace period ends. For Volunteer Coordinators at grant-funded organizations, this is a real risk worth raising during the offer negotiation stage.
