Translate your credentials before applying
Chilean university transcripts and professional certifications must be translated into English and evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Development Manager roles require demonstrable bachelor's-level education in a directly related field, and consular officers will scrutinize this during your H-1B1 Chile visa interview.
Use O*NET to frame your specialty occupation case
Pull the Development Manager occupation profile from O*NET before outreach. It documents the degree requirement and core competencies USCIS and DOL use to classify the role as a specialty occupation, giving you precise language to align your resume and LCA job description.
Target employers with existing LCA filing history
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that have already filed Labor Condition Applications for Development Manager or related roles. Those employers understand the H-1B1 Chile process and won't confuse it with the H-1B lottery, which cuts through early-stage friction in salary and sponsorship conversations.
Verify the prevailing wage tier before negotiating
Run your target job title and work location through the OFLC Wage Search before entering salary negotiations. Your employer's LCA must certify a wage at or above the prevailing level, so knowing the DOL wage tier upfront tells you the floor and prevents offer letters that can't clear LCA certification.
Confirm your employer will file the LCA promptly after an offer
Ask during the offer stage whether the company has filed LCAs before and who handles the process internally. Development Manager roles often sit in project pipelines with fixed start dates, and a delayed LCA certification at DOL can push your consular appointment past your target onboarding date.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions at the Santiago consulate
The H-1B1 Chile visa requires you to demonstrate ties to Chile and nonimmigrant intent at your consular interview. Bring documentation of property, family, or professional obligations in Chile alongside your job offer and LCA, as Development Manager candidates without visible home-country ties draw additional scrutiny.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Development Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for the H-1B1 Chile visa?
Yes. Development Manager positions require at least a bachelor's degree in a directly related field such as computer science, engineering, business administration, or a comparable discipline. DOL and the consular officer will verify this through the Labor Condition Application and your supporting credentials. Roles where any unrelated degree satisfies the requirement could face scrutiny, so aligning your job description to the specific degree field strengthens the case.
How does the H-1B1 Chile visa differ from H-1B for Development Manager roles?
The H-1B1 Chile visa has no lottery, no USCIS petition, and no employer filing fee paid to USCIS. Your employer files a Labor Condition Application with DOL and you apply directly at the U.S. consulate in Santiago. The annual cap of 1,400 visas for Chilean nationals has not historically been exhausted, so qualified Development Manager candidates can apply year-round without waiting for an annual registration window.
How do I find employers who will sponsor an H-1B1 Chile visa for a Development Manager position?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Development Manager roles filtered by H-1B1 Chile visa sponsorship and LCA filing history. Employers already familiar with the Labor Condition Application process are significantly faster to move from offer to consular appointment, which matters for roles with defined project start dates.
Can I switch employers on an H-1B1 Chile visa if I'm already working in the U.S. as a Development Manager?
Yes, but the new employer must file a fresh Labor Condition Application and you will need a new H-1B1 Chile visa stamp before re-entering the U.S. or, in some cases, a change of status if you remain inside the country. The H-1B1 does not carry the portability protections available under H-1B, so confirm the new LCA is certified before leaving your current role.
What documentation does a Development Manager typically need for the H-1B1 Chile consular interview?
You'll need your certified LCA, a detailed job offer letter confirming your title and specialty occupation duties, English-translated and evaluated academic credentials, your Chilean passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended entry date, a completed DS-160, and documentation demonstrating nonimmigrant intent such as ties to Chile. Development Manager candidates should also carry an organizational chart or role description showing supervisory scope, as consular officers assess whether the position genuinely requires a degree-level professional.
