Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
Program Manager roles must qualify as a specialty occupation under H-1B1 visa rules, meaning your bachelor's degree field must directly relate to the position. A degree in engineering, information systems, or business administration with a project management focus strengthens your case considerably.
Target employers with active LCA filing histories
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies that have filed Labor Condition Applications for Program Manager roles. Employers already familiar with the LCA process are far less likely to stall your offer over unfamiliarity with H-1B1 Chile requirements.
Request your employer file the LCA before your start date
Your employer must submit and receive DOL certification on the LCA before you apply at the consulate. Build at least three to four weeks of LCA processing time into your offer negotiation so your consulate appointment isn't delayed waiting on DOL.
Pull your O*NET occupation profile before negotiating salary
Program Manager sits under a specific Standard Occupational Classification code. Use the OFLC Wage Search to find the prevailing wage for your metro area before your offer, so you can confirm your compensation meets DOL requirements and avoid an LCA denial after the fact.
Prepare a clear degree-to-role narrative for your visa interview
Consular officers reviewing H-1B1 Chile applications assess whether your education directly supports the Program Manager role. Bring your degree transcripts, your job offer letter, and a concise written explanation connecting your field of study to the project management responsibilities in your offer.
Verify your employer participates in E-Verify before accepting an offer
H-1B1 Chile employers must use E-Verify to confirm work authorization. Confirm this early in the offer process. If the employer isn't enrolled, they'll need to register before your start date, which can add unexpected delay to your onboarding timeline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Program Manager role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B1 Chile?
Yes, provided the position genuinely requires a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as engineering, business administration, or information systems. Roles where any general degree is acceptable regardless of field may not satisfy the specialty occupation standard. Your employer's LCA must describe the degree requirement clearly to support your consulate application.
How does H-1B1 Chile compare to H-1B for Program Manager positions?
H-1B visa1 Chile has a dedicated 1,400-visa annual cap for Chilean nationals that has never been exhausted, so there's no lottery and no employer petition filed with USCIS. You apply directly at the U.S. consulate once your employer's LCA is certified. H-1B visa requires a USCIS petition, is subject to the annual 65,000 cap lottery, and carries significantly higher filing fees and longer processing timelines.
How do I find Program Manager employers who already know how to sponsor H-1B1 Chile visas?
Migrate Mate filters job listings by verified LCA filing history, so you can identify Program Manager roles at employers who have already navigated the DOL Labor Condition Application process for Chilean professionals. That filing history signals the employer understands H-1B1 Chile requirements and won't be learning the process for the first time during your offer.
Can I renew my H-1B1 Chile status if I stay in the same Program Manager role?
H-1B1 Chile is issued in one-year increments and can be renewed indefinitely as long as you maintain a qualifying Program Manager position and your employer files a new LCA each renewal cycle. Unlike H-1B, there's no six-year maximum, but each renewal requires an up-to-date LCA certified by DOL before your status extension is granted.
What happens to my H-1B1 Chile status if I change employers after accepting a Program Manager role?
Your H-1B1 Chile authorization is employer-specific. If you change companies, your new employer must file a new LCA with DOL and you'll need to obtain a new H-1B1 visa stamp at the consulate before re-entering the U.S. in that status. There's no portability provision equivalent to what H-1B holders have under AC21, so confirm your new employer's LCA is certified before you leave your current position.
