Verify your credentials match U.S. licensing standards
H-2B visa field technician roles often require equipment-specific certifications recognized in the U.S. Check whether your trade credentials from your home country translate directly or need a third-party equivalency evaluation before employers will consider your application.
Target employers with recurring seasonal labor needs
Companies that run scheduled equipment maintenance cycles, seasonal infrastructure projects, or storm-season response contracts file H-2B petitions annually. Returning employer-employee relationships give you a stronger foothold since USCIS views repeat sponsors more favorably in the petition process.
Search H-2B Field Service Technician jobs on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate lets you filter Field Service Technician roles by employers with active H-2B sponsorship history, so you're not applying blind. Use it to identify which companies have filed DOL labor certifications for technician roles in your specialty.
Understand the cap split before timing your application
The 66,000 H-2B annual cap is divided into two 33,000-slot halves for October through March and April through September start dates. Filing in the first week after each allocation opens significantly improves your odds before slots are exhausted.
Ask your employer about prevailing wage before accepting an offer
DOL requires H-2B employers to pay the prevailing wage for your occupation and work location. Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the current prevailing wage for Field Service Technician roles in your destination state before committing to any offer.
Confirm your job duties align with the O*NET classification
The DOL labor certification ties directly to the O*NET occupation code your employer uses. If your actual duties include tasks outside the filed description, it can jeopardize your status. Review the O*NET profile for Field Service Technicians with your employer before the petition is submitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Field Service Technician jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find Field Service Technician positions where employers have active H-2B sponsorship history. General job boards don't filter by visa type, so you end up applying to roles where sponsorship was never on the table. Migrate Mate surfaces only employers who have filed H-2B labor certifications, narrowing your search to real opportunities.
How does the H-2B visa cap affect my chances of getting sponsored as a Field Service Technician?
The H-2B program issues a maximum of 66,000 visas per fiscal year, split into two 33,000-slot halves by season. Demand from employers in construction, HVAC, and infrastructure regularly exhausts allocations within days of each cap opening. Your employer must file the DOL temporary labor certification well before the intended start date, and you should coordinate with them to ensure the I-129 petition reaches USCIS before the cap fills.
Does my employer need to prove no U.S. workers were available before sponsoring me?
Yes. DOL requires H-2B employers to conduct a formal recruitment process demonstrating that qualified U.S. workers aren't available for the position. For Field Service Technician roles, this typically involves posting the job through approved channels and documenting any applicants. Only after DOL certifies that domestic recruitment came up short can the employer file the I-129 petition with USCIS on your behalf.
Can I change employers on an H-2B visa if a better Field Service Technician role comes up?
H-2B status is tied to the specific employer and job listed on your approved petition. Switching employers requires your new employer to start the entire DOL labor certification and USCIS filing process from scratch, including a new temporary labor certification. Given the cap constraints, a new petition filed outside the original period may not secure an available visa slot, so employer changes mid-season carry real risk.
