H-2B Visa Groom Jobs
Groom jobs at U.S. equestrian facilities, ranches, and racing stables are among the clearest fits for H-2B visa sponsorship. Employers file for temporary labor certification through the DOL, and positions typically align with the summer cap cycle given peak training and competition seasons. The 66,000 annual cap fills quickly, so timing your job search matters.

INTRODUCTION
The Center is for yearlings, two-year-olds in training and layups. These horses are considered race ready two-year-olds in training, they have to be trained.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The grooms provide daily care and handling of the yearlings, two-year-olds and some older horses. Over the next several months all yearlings begin incremental introduction to have tack on their backs, add riders to spin in their stalls, walks in the paddocks and ultimately running on the farm track. The groom's responsibilities include:
- Responsibility for the safety of the horses and nearby workers.
- Grooming the horses for sale.
- Assisting in the observations of any ailments or infections which may affect the horses.
- Administering medication and/or treating the horses under the supervision of the farm manager.
- Using bandages which assist in the application of topical medications, rehabilitation exercises or intravenous medication.
- Prior to the sales of the racehorses, prepping the horses by clipping away any unwanted hair from their manes, ankles, noses and ears.
- Doing daily bathing, conditioning, treatment of any soreness and standing and walking the horses for inspection by prospective buyers.
The sales start in late September and continue through June. To have the horses ready, we need the additional workers as soon as possible. Unfortunately, the petition last year was filed late so we are making an effort to get the grooms here on time; that is why the start date is different. The employer has had a substantial increase of horses due to his winning the Kentucky Derby this year.

Document your hands-on horse care experience
Compile records of specific duties you've performed: mucking stalls, wrapping legs, administering feed programs, and handling horses during transport. Employers filing an H-2B visa petition need to describe the role precisely, and your documented experience should mirror that job description exactly.
Target equestrian facilities with prior H-2B history
Racing stables, polo clubs, and hunter-jumper show barns that have sponsored H-2B workers before already understand the filing timeline and prevailing wage requirements. Search Migrate Mate to filter for employers with verified H-2B sponsorship history in equine and livestock care roles.
Check prevailing wage rates before negotiating
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up prevailing wages for groom roles in your target state. Your offered wage must meet or exceed the DOL-certified rate, and knowing this figure before your offer conversation prevents surprises during the employer's labor certification filing.
Apply before January for the summer cap
H-2B visas for positions starting on or after April 1 fall under the first-half cap of 33,000. USCIS typically receives more petitions than available numbers within days of the filing window opening, so your employer needs to file as early as DOL certification allows.
Confirm your employer's E-Verify enrollment status
Some H-2B employers are required to participate in E-Verify for employment eligibility verification. Ask the barn manager or HR contact directly before you invest time in the application process, since unenrolled employers may face delays completing onboarding after your visa is approved.
Align your start date with the facility's competition calendar
Petition start dates must reflect genuine temporary need, and USCIS scrutinizes whether the season is clearly defined. Match your proposed start date to the opening of the show circuit, racing meet, or breeding season your employer references in their DOL temporary labor certification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I find groom jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for groom positions at U.S. equestrian facilities, racing stables, and ranches that have active H-2B sponsorship history. Because H-2B employers must file with the DOL before hiring, their sponsorship record is verifiable, and Migrate Mate surfaces that data so you can focus on employers already set up to sponsor.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect groom job applications?
USCIS issues only 66,000 H-2B visas per fiscal year, split into two half-year caps of 33,000 each. Equestrian and stable positions often target the summer half, which opens for petitions in January for April start dates. Cap numbers are regularly exhausted within days of the filing window opening, so your employer must have DOL certification completed before that window arrives.
What qualifications do H-2B employers look for in a groom?
Most facilities require demonstrable hands-on experience with horses, including daily care routines, tack cleaning, bandaging, and safe handling during transport or competition. Because H-2B petitions require employers to define the temporary position specifically, your background should closely match the stated duties. Specialization in a particular discipline, such as thoroughbred racing or polo, strengthens your fit for facilities in those sectors.
Can a groom change employers while on an H-2B visa?
H-2B status is employer-specific, meaning your authorization is tied to the petitioning facility. If you want to work for a different employer, that new employer must file a separate H-2B petition and receive approval before you begin work. Switching without an approved petition puts you out of status, and the 10-day grace period after your authorized end date does not extend to cover unauthorized employment.
