Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Visa Sponsorship as a Welder
Verify your welding credentials transfer correctly
U.S. employers hiring H-2B visa welders often require AWS certification or equivalent documentation. Get your credentials formally evaluated before applying so sponsors can confirm your qualifications meet their project specifications without delays.
Target industries with recurring H-2B welder demand
Seasonal construction firms, shipyards, and oil field support contractors file H-2B petitions annually. Focusing your search on employers with established temporary labor certification history puts you ahead of applicants approaching sponsors without prior H-2B experience.
Search verified H-2B sponsors on Migrate Mate
Migrate Mate filters employers by visa sponsorship history so you're only applying to companies that have actively filed H-2B petitions for trade roles like welding, not just those that say they're open to sponsorship.
Apply before the cap half-year cutoffs
The 66,000 annual H-2B cap splits into two halves: 33,000 for workers starting October through March, and 33,000 for April through September. Missing a half-year filing window can delay your start date by six months.
Confirm your employer files the I-129 correctly
After DOL certifies the temporary labor certification, your sponsor must file Form I-129 with USCIS. Errors in the petition's job description or wage attestation for welding roles are a common cause of processing delays.
Understand the prevailing wage before negotiating your offer
Use the OFLC Wage Search to look up the DOL prevailing wage for welders in your employer's specific location. Sponsors are legally required to pay at least that rate, so knowing the number protects you in any offer conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Welder jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for this search. It surfaces employers with verified H-2B filing history for trade and construction roles, including welding positions, so you're not guessing which companies will actually sponsor. Filter by role type and location to find active sponsors hiring for seasonal projects.
Does the H-2B annual cap affect when I can start a Welder job?
Yes, directly. The 66,000 annual cap is split into two halves by start date, and each half fills quickly, sometimes within days of opening. Employers must file your petition early enough to secure a cap slot for your intended start window. If the cap is reached before your petition is counted, your employer must wait for the next half-year allocation, delaying your U.S. start date by up to six months.
What welding credentials do H-2B sponsors typically require?
Most U.S. employers hiring H-2B welders look for AWS certification, specific process qualifications such as MIG, TIG, or stick welding, and documented experience on the equipment or materials relevant to their projects. Some construction and shipyard sponsors also require proof of safety training. Having your credentials formally evaluated before applying reduces back-and-forth during the DOL labor certification review.
Can I change employers while on an H-2B visa as a welder?
H-2B status is employer-specific, meaning your authorization is tied to the petitioning sponsor. If you want to work for a different employer, that new employer must file a separate H-2B petition and obtain their own DOL temporary labor certification for the role. You cannot simply transfer your existing H-2B status. The new petition is also subject to cap availability unless an exemption or returning worker provision applies.
