Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Construction Jobs
Document your trade credentials before applying
Gather certifications like OSHA 10 or 30, equipment operator licenses, and any trade apprenticeship records. H-2B visa construction employers expect proof of role-specific skills upfront, and missing documents slow the petition before it reaches USCIS.
Target employers with recurring seasonal project cycles
Landscaping contractors, resort developers, and municipal infrastructure firms hire on predictable seasonal timelines. Returning to the same employer simplifies your next H-2B petition because the DOL prevailing-wage determination is already established for that worksite.
Search Migrate Mate for verified H-2B construction openings
Migrate Mate filters construction roles by employers with active H-2B filing history, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with temporary labor certification. Use it to identify contractors already working within the annual cap cycle.
Confirm the job order was posted before you apply
DOL requires employers to conduct domestic recruitment before certifying an H-2B petition. Ask your prospective employer for the SWA job order number. If recruitment hasn't started, your petition can't move forward, regardless of the job offer.
Apply well ahead of the cap registration window
The 33,000 visas in each half-year allocation exhaust fast, sometimes within weeks of the filing window opening. Construction projects starting October 1 or April 1 need petitions filed months earlier to avoid cap cutoffs that delay your start date.
Verify the prevailing wage against the OFLC Wage Search
Your employer's offered wage must meet or exceed the DOL prevailing wage for your occupation and worksite county. Cross-check the offer using the OFLC Wage Search before signing anything to ensure the certification won't be challenged during review.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find construction jobs with H-2B visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the recommended way to search. It surfaces construction employers with verified H-2B filing history, so you can focus on companies that have already navigated the DOL temporary labor certification process. General job boards don't filter for visa sponsorship type, which means most listings you find there won't lead to a valid H-2B petition.
How does the H-2B annual cap affect construction job seekers?
USCIS limits H-2B visas to 66,000 per fiscal year, split into two 33,000-visa allocations for the winter and summer halves. Construction projects are heavily concentrated in the summer half, so that allocation fills quickly. Employers must file petitions well before the cap window opens, and workers whose petitions arrive after the cap is hit must wait for the next cycle or supplemental allocations if Congress authorizes them.
Does construction work qualify for the H-2B visa?
Yes, provided the employer can demonstrate the work is temporary and seasonal. Roles like laborer, carpenter, equipment operator, and site finisher are regularly certified under H-2B. The employer must show the need is tied to a peak season or one-time project with a defined end date, not ongoing year-round operations. O*NET occupation codes help match your role to DOL-recognized construction classifications during the certification process.
Can I change construction employers while on an H-2B visa?
Changing employers on an H-2B visa requires your new employer to file a fresh I-129 petition with USCIS and obtain a new DOL temporary labor certification. You can't simply transfer the sponsorship. Working for an employer not listed on your petition violates your status, so don't start work with a new company until USCIS approves the new petition and you receive updated documentation.
