Hospitalist Jobs in North Carolina: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hospitalist in North Carolina?
To become a hospitalist in North Carolina, you must hold an active license issued by the North Carolina Medical Board, which requires graduation from an accredited medical school, completion of an accredited residency program, and passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination steps. Most hospitalist positions also require board certification or active eligibility in internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatrics. Physicians with a license in good standing from certain other states may apply through the Medical Board's endorsement pathway.
How much do hospitalists make in North Carolina?
Hospitalists in North Carolina earn a median of about $260,330 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $66,740 for the lowest 10% to over $424,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hospitalists in North Carolina?
Employers hiring hospitalists in North Carolina right now include UNC Health, Novant Health, and TeamHealth, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. North Carolina's large integrated health systems, including those anchored in the Charlotte and Research Triangle regions, account for a significant share of ongoing hospitalist recruitment across the state.
Which North Carolina cities have the most hospitalist jobs?
The cities with the most hospitalist openings in North Carolina are Winston-Salem, Raleigh, and Smithfield. Charlotte and Raleigh drive the largest share of demand because of their major health system headquarters and fast-growing urban populations, while Greensboro and other Piedmont Triad communities contribute steady volume through regional medical centers and academic affiliates serving surrounding rural counties.
Are there remote hospitalist jobs in North Carolina?
Yes, but they're rare. Hospitalist work is fundamentally bedside and inpatient by nature, so the large majority of roles require on-site presence. About 9% of hospitalist openings tied to North Carolina are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those positions typically involve telemedicine coverage, overnight tele-hospitalist shifts, or administrative and utilization review duties rather than direct inpatient rounding.
How can I get hired as a hospitalist in North Carolina with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-physician programs or nocturnist tracks at larger North Carolina health systems such as Atrium Health or Novant Health, which regularly onboard physicians completing residency. Candidates coming from internal medicine or family medicine residencies at North Carolina programs, including those affiliated with UNC Health or Wake Forest Baptist Health, have a direct route into entry-level hospitalist roles. Obtaining North Carolina Medical Board licensure early and achieving board eligibility strengthens any application significantly.
Where can I find and apply to hospitalist jobs in North Carolina?
