HVAC Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a hvac in California?
Becoming an hvac in California typically starts with completing an accredited vocational or community college HVAC program or a state-approved apprenticeship through organizations such as the UA Local unions or RSES. Technicians handling refrigerants must hold EPA Section 608 certification. Those performing work as a contractor need a C-20 HVAC license from the California Contractors State License Board. Most employers also require hands-on field hours before independent assignment.
How much do HVACs make in California?
HVACs in California earn a median of about $72,560 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,950 for the lowest 10% to over $109,060 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire hvacs in California?
Employers hiring hvacs in California right now include Johnson Controls, Friendly Franchisees Corporation, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large commercial complexes, healthcare campuses, and hospitality properties keeps a broad mix of regional and national HVAC contractors consistently active in the market.
Which California cities have the most hvac jobs?
Los Angeles, San Diego, and San Jose have the most hvac openings in California right now. Los Angeles drives the largest share through its dense commercial real estate, hotel, and healthcare infrastructure, while San Diego's military installations and life sciences campuses fuel steady demand, and San Jose and the broader Bay Area generate openings tied to large tech campuses and data centers requiring precision climate control.
Are there remote hvac jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 2% of hvac openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on, on-site nature of most installation, service, and maintenance work. The exceptions tend to be estimating, project management, and building automation programming roles, which can sometimes be performed partly off-site.
How can I get hired as a hvac in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a registered HVAC apprenticeship through a California Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee program, which combines paid on-the-job hours with classroom instruction from day one. Large California facilities management firms and school districts also hire helper or maintenance technician I roles that require no prior HVAC experience. Holding EPA Section 608 certification before applying signals readiness and separates candidates without field hours from the rest of the applicant pool.
