DESCRIPTION
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we’re the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you’ll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
As an Amazon Power Generation Infrastructure Engineer, you will provide full life-cycle engineering support to AWS Data Centers' Power Generation Systems (PGS) from design inception through commissioning, operation, maintenance, and continuous improvement. You will be the senior 'go-to' engineering resource when technical advice is needed on power generation technologies, and will leverage deep subject matter expertise across diesel generators, natural/gas turbine systems, fuel cells, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). You will engage with diverse cross-functional teams to:
- Lead troubleshooting, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and Corrective Action (CA) documentation for power generation system failures and Site Impairment Events (SIEs).
- Directly support operational issues with ad-hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, and critical event support for power generation equipment.
- Interface with internal data center design engineering, server hardware, environmental health and safety, and controls teams to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in power generation services delivered.
- Work on concurrent projects, sometimes across multiple geographical regions.
- Initiate and lead engineering audits including on-site visits within Amazon's owned or collocated data centers; produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
- Act as resident engineer during new construction projects; support construction, commissioning, and turnover of power generation systems.
- Perform critical power generation system failure investigations, driving resolution of open cases and reducing SLA non-compliance across the fleet.
- Assist with regulatory compliance and reporting related to air quality, emissions permitting, fuel storage, and spill prevention.
Key job responsibilities
- Lead Critical Failure Investigation & RCA - Serve as the technical lead for global power generation failure investigations, driving resolution by partnering with DCEO, Power Generation Solutions, Availability, IRQ, and vendors to establish root cause and implement corrective actions.
- Performance Monitoring & Optimization Leadership - Own and drive Power Generation System Performance programs, analyzing fleet-wide trends and developing scalable solutions.
- Preventive Maintenance Optimization and Fuel System Quality - Develop and optimize preventive maintenance strategies, targeting the highest AFR to reduce unplanned failures during initial deployments and Lead fuel system quality and reliability programs globally.
- Emissions & Regulatory Compliance - Lead emissions compliance programs, supporting air quality permitting, fuel storage regulations, and spill prevention plans in collaboration with construction, operations and environmental team.
- Training & Knowledge Transfer - Develop and deliver technical training programs for DCEO and FE teams on power generation systems and supporting equipment, building regional expertise that develop knowledge across local teams.
- Emerging Technology Integration - Provide engineering support for AWS investments in fuel cells, BESS, hybrid power generation, and future technologies such as SMRs, reducing commissioning delays and integration challenges.
- Vendor Management - Supervise and validate generator vendor performed activities (startup, commissioning, maintenance); manage specialized power generation consultants and work with reliability team to manage vendor quality and SLA compliance.
A day in the life
Each day you will interact with different teams responsible for all aspects of the data centers. You will prioritize your activities to support data center capacity availability and safety focusing on the actions that are most impactful.
