Investigator Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a investigator in New York?
To work as a licensed private investigator in New York, you must obtain a license through the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, which oversees private investigator registration under the General Business Law. Applicants generally need a qualifying background in law enforcement, military service, or investigative work, and must pass a background check. For roles in insurance or financial investigation, employers often prioritize candidates who hold a degree in criminal justice, finance, or a related discipline alongside that license.
Which companies hire investigators in New York?
Employers hiring investigators in New York right now include NYC Health + Hospitals, City of New York, and Island Peer Review Organization, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of financial institutions, major insurance carriers, and state oversight agencies makes it one of the most employer-dense markets for investigators anywhere in the country.
Which New York cities have the most investigator jobs?
New York, Central Islip, and Queens account for the largest share of investigator openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of its density of financial services firms, insurance companies, and law offices that staff in-house investigators, while Albany's concentration of state agencies and regulatory bodies drives consistent demand outside the metro.
Are there remote investigator jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Much of investigator work involves field interviews, site visits, and in-person surveillance that can't be done remotely. About 24% of investigator openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in desk-based specialties like fraud analysis, background screening, and document review.
How can I get hired as a investigator in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting in a claims adjuster, compliance analyst, or loss prevention associate role, which large New York insurers and retailers use as a direct feeder into investigator positions. Companies like New York Life and regional insurance carriers frequently post junior claims roles that build the case review skills investigators need. Obtaining your New York DCJS private investigator license early signals commitment and gives you a concrete credential employers recognize, even before you have direct investigative experience.
