IT Support Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a it support engineer in California?
There is no state-issued license required to work as an it support engineer in California, so the path runs through education and industry credentials. Most California employers expect at least an associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field, though candidates who hold CompTIA A+, Network+, or Microsoft certifications regularly compete for the same roles. Starting in a help desk or desktop support position at a California company or university is the most common entry path before stepping into an engineer title.
How much do IT support engineers make in California?
IT support engineers in California earn a median of about $79,570 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $52,270 for the lowest 10% to over $122,750 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire it support engineers in California?
Employers hiring it support engineers in California right now include Amazon, Gr8ttek, and GSES, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. California's concentration of large technology headquarters, major hospital systems, and defense contractors means hiring activity is consistent year-round across the state.
Which California cities have the most it support engineer jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most it support engineer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its density of technology company headquarters and enterprise offices, while Los Angeles draws volume from media, healthcare, and financial services employers, and San Diego's openings are heavily shaped by its large defense, biotech, and military-adjacent contractor presence.
Are there remote it support engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited, since much of the role involves on-site hardware support, device provisioning, and hands-on troubleshooting. About 34% of it support engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate on cloud administration, remote desktop support, and identity management work that does not require a physical presence.
How can I get hired as a it support engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a help desk or IT technician role at a California employer, which typically requires only a CompTIA A+ or equivalent certification and a willingness to learn on the job. Large California institutions like the UC and CSU systems, Kaiser Permanente, and technology companies across the Bay Area and Los Angeles regularly hire for tier-one support roles that do not require prior full-time experience. Building a home lab, earning the Google IT Support Certificate, and applying to IT apprenticeship programs run through California community colleges can strengthen a candidate's profile before the first interview.
Where can I find and apply to it support engineer jobs in California?
