- Log, monitor, prioritize, and update tickets using ITSM tools such as ServiceNow or Jira, following SLA, documentation, and escalation procedures aligned to ITIL best practices.
- Assist with OS installation, reinstallation, upgrades, and patching for Windows desktops and laptops, and install and support standard applications such as Microsoft Office, Acrobat Reader, mail clients, and collaboration tools.
- Help deploy and maintain antivirus and endpoint protection, configure user profiles and email accounts, and troubleshoot basic LAN, Wi-Fi, VPN, and printer connectivity issues.
- Support IT onboarding and offboarding activities, including system setup, access provisioning, asset handover, and recovery, ensuring data security and compliance during employee exits.
- Maintain accurate IT asset and inventory records in CMDB and asset management tools, and support e-waste and e-recycling activities in line with company policies.
- Create and update technical documentation, SOPs, and knowledge base articles, and collaborate with cross-functional IT teams on projects, upgrades, and rollouts.

Tips for Your IT Support Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to ticket volume
IT support engineer job postings often specify expected ticket loads or SLA targets. Quantify your experience by noting the average daily tickets you handled and the resolution rate you maintained, so hiring managers can immediately gauge your pace.
List certifications before your degree
For it support engineer roles, CompTIA A+, Network+, and Microsoft certifications carry more weight than your degree title in most screening filters. Put your active certifications in a dedicated section above education so they surface first on an ATS scan.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists it support engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by environment type
It support engineer roles vary sharply between MSP, in-house IT, and government environments. When searching, identify which environment suits your background, because the tools, escalation paths, and pace differ enough to make your resume read stronger for one than the other.
Prepare a troubleshooting story for interviews
Most it support engineer interviews include a scenario question about diagnosing a network or hardware failure under pressure. Prepare two or three specific stories that walk through your diagnostic method, what you ruled out first, and how you communicated status to the end user.
Negotiate shift differential into your offer
Many it support engineer positions include on-call rotations or after-hours coverage. Before accepting, ask explicitly whether on-call hours carry additional pay and confirm the rotation frequency, since these terms are rarely written into the initial offer without prompting.
IT Support Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most it support engineers?
The companies hiring the most it support engineers right now include Amazon, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), and CVS Health, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is consistently strong at managed service providers, large hospital networks, and financial institutions that maintain large on-site user bases.
How many it support engineer jobs are remote?
About 24% of it support engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though fully remote roles are more common for tier-two and tier-three support than for frontline helpdesk positions that require hands-on hardware work. Cloud infrastructure and software-only support roles tend to carry the highest share of remote flexibility.
How do you become an it support engineer?
Start by earning a foundational certification such as CompTIA A+ to demonstrate hardware and operating system competency to employers. Build hands-on experience through a helpdesk role, an internship, or a home lab where you practice imaging machines, configuring routers, and troubleshooting connectivity. From there, specialize in networking or systems administration and pursue intermediate certifications to move into engineer-level roles.
Can you get hired as an it support engineer with little experience?
Yes, many employers hire it support engineers at the entry level if you can show foundational certifications and any hands-on troubleshooting practice. Volunteering to manage IT for a nonprofit, building a home lab, or completing a community college IT program all count as relevant experience. Emphasize your diagnostic process and customer communication skills, which matter as much as technical depth at the junior level.
What does the it support engineer interview process look like?
Most it support engineer interviews include an initial recruiter screen focused on your environment experience, followed by a technical interview where you walk through a troubleshooting scenario step by step. Some employers add a practical skills assessment, asking you to demonstrate a task such as resetting a locked account or diagnosing a network connectivity issue. A final interview with the IT manager typically covers team fit and on-call expectations.
Where can I find and apply to it support engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to it support engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and preferred environment, then apply directly to each one that fits.
