Java Software Engineer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a java software engineer in Washington?
Washington does not require a state-issued license or registration to work as a java software engineer. Most employers hire candidates who hold a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field, though some accept a strong portfolio or relevant bootcamp credentials in place of a degree. Building hands-on Java projects, earning widely recognized certifications such as Oracle Certified Professional Java SE, and targeting internship programs at Washington's large tech employers are the most direct paths into the field.
How much do java software engineers make in Washington?
Java software engineers in Washington earn a median of about $166,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,810 for the lowest 10% to over $255,350 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire java software engineers in Washington?
Employers hiring java software engineers in Washington right now include Walmart, Novisync, and SmarTek21, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Which Washington cities have the most java software engineer jobs?

Seattle drives the largest share of listings due to its dense concentration of tech company headquarters and cloud infrastructure operations, while Bellevue and Redmond attract substantial volume from major campus-based employers and the enterprise software ecosystem that has grown up around them.

About 50% of java software engineer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed teams. Backend development, API work, and cloud infrastructure roles are the most consistently remote, while positions that involve on-site collaboration with hardware or embedded teams tend to require in-person presence.

The most realistic entry path is securing an internship or new-graduate rotational program at one of Washington's large tech employers. Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing all run structured programs that place early-career engineers into Java-focused teams. Candidates without a traditional degree can strengthen their candidacy by building a portfolio of deployed Java projects, contributing to open-source repositories, and earning the Oracle Certified Associate Java SE credential.
