INTRODUCTION
The Laboratory Technician is primarily responsible for assisting students and faculty in the machining, fabrication, assembly, and maintenance of project and laboratory equipment. The position reports to the Director of Operations.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (RESPONSIBILITIES):
- Fabricates new parts and systems intended for teaching, student projects, or research. Required skills including machining, welding, and general fabrication.
- Aids students and faculty in the selection, installation and upkeep of academic laboratory equipment used for instruction and research.
- Performs preventive maintenance on various equipment; constructs, tests, and evaluates equipment and processes; maintains laboratory equipment and instructs students in the proper use of equipment; establishes and oversees standard operating procedures.
- Installs, operates, maintains, and repairs a variety of laboratory equipment used for instructional activities. Updates equipment maintenance records and manuals and records; and, orders related laboratory materials and supplies.
- Provides assistance with ECS building/facility logistical functions.
- Handles general technician assignments (overseeing the moving of equipment or offices, etc.). Maintain a clean, organized work area.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School diploma or equivalent certification.
- Minimum one year of experience as a laboratory technician, machinist, or related field. Knowledge/Skill/Ability: Mechanical aptitude and basic laboratory technical skills.
- Good writing skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Willingness/aptitude to learn new software and processes.
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals with varied backgrounds.
- Self-starter and ability to work independently without close supervision.
- Knowledge of safe working practices in compliance with OSHA and EPA requirements.
- Able to work a varied schedule.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Two plus years of experience in an engineering-related technician position.
- Knowledge, experience, and the ability to provide guidance and training to students and other personnel in fabrication and machining.
- Vocational training in any of the following areas (or combination of areas): welding, lab technician, lathe and mill operation, and mechanical training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The ability to: walk and climb stairs unassisted, move and carry heavy objects.
