Learning And Development Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a learning and development professional in California?
Most learning and development roles in California require a bachelor's degree in instructional design, human resources, organizational psychology, or education, with a master's degree preferred for senior positions. California does not issue a state license for this field, but widely recognized credentials such as the ATD Certified Professional in Talent Development or the SHRM Certified Professional strengthen candidacy significantly. Large California employers typically expect a portfolio of training materials alongside your application.
How much do learning and developments make in California?
Learning and developments in California earn a median of about $75,790 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $43,320 for the lowest 10% to over $134,270 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire learning and developments in California?
Employers hiring learning and developments in California right now include California State University, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, and Pacific Gas and Electric, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, large healthcare systems, and entertainment studios creates particularly consistent demand for L&D professionals across the state.
Which California cities have the most learning and development jobs?
Oakland, San Francisco, and Los Angeles account for the highest concentration of learning and development openings in California. The Bay Area leads because of its dense cluster of technology headquarters, while Los Angeles draws demand from entertainment, healthcare, and financial services employers, and San Diego's large biotech and defense sectors generate steady openings for training and development professionals.
Are there remote learning and development jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 16% of learning and development openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves digital content creation, virtual facilitation, and LMS administration rather than mandatory on-site delivery. Roles focused on eLearning development and program design tend to offer the most location flexibility.
How can I get hired as a learning and development professional in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an instructional design or L&D coordinator role, which California's large technology and healthcare employers post regularly for candidates with a relevant degree and a portfolio of sample training materials. Companies like Kaiser Permanente and large Bay Area tech firms run rotational HR programs that include learning and development assignments. Gaining experience with a free or academic LMS, earning the ATD CPTD certification, and applying to HR generalist or training assistant roles are the most direct ways to build toward a full L&D position.
Where can I find and apply to learning and development jobs in California?
You can find and apply to learning and development jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings for roles that match your background and apply directly to the ones that fit.
