Learning And Development Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a learning and development manager in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in human resources, organizational development, education, or a related field, followed by progressive experience in training coordination or instructional design roles. California has no state-issued license for learning and development managers, but employers here consistently favor candidates who hold the Association for Talent Development's CPTD certification or SHRM's SHRM-CP credential. Building a portfolio of program outcomes and measurable learner results strengthens candidacy significantly.
How much do learning and development managers make in California?
Learning and development managers in California earn a median of about $156,260 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,900 for the lowest 10% to over $274,960 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire learning and development managers in California?
Employers hiring learning and development managers in California right now include MV Transportation, Fluor, and Rtx Corporation, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of large technology firms, integrated health systems, and global financial institutions means demand is spread across multiple industries rather than tied to a single sector.
Which California cities have the most learning and development manager jobs?
Longueuil, Los Angeles, and San Diego have the most learning and development manager openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its scale across entertainment, healthcare, and corporate headquarters, San Francisco and the Bay Area draw heavily from technology companies, and San Diego's openings are driven largely by biotech firms, defense contractors, and regional health systems such as Scripps and Sharp.
Are there remote learning and development manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Learning and development manager work is largely strategic and digital, making remote and hybrid arrangements common. About 6% of learning and development manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how widely adopted virtual learning delivery has become. Curriculum design, program management, and vendor oversight are the functions most likely to be performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a learning and development manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a learning coordinator or training specialist role, which large California employers such as Kaiser Permanente, Salesforce, and major UC Health systems use as a feeder for manager-track positions. Adjacent roles in HR generalist, instructional design, or talent coordination functions at California tech or healthcare organizations are also common bridges. Earning the ATD's APTD certification and building a portfolio of completed training projects, even from volunteer or contract work, gives candidates without direct management experience a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to learning and development manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to learning and development manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries and experience levels. Search the listings, find roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
