Legal Counsel Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a legal counsel in Texas?
To work as a legal counsel in Texas, you must earn a Juris Doctor from an accredited law school, pass the Texas Bar Examination, and obtain licensure through the State Bar of Texas. Once licensed, most in-house legal counsel roles also expect experience in a law firm or corporate legal department. Texas does not require a separate in-house registration, so an active State Bar of Texas license is the core credential employers look for.
How much do legal counsels make in Texas?
Legal counsels in Texas earn a median of about $154,200 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $79,340 for the lowest 10% to over $349,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire legal counsels in Texas?
Employers hiring legal counsels in Texas right now include Dallas County, Office of the Attorney General, and Apple, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of Fortune 500 headquarters, major energy companies, and large hospital systems means in-house legal teams here are consistently among the largest and most active in the country.
Which Texas cities have the most legal counsel jobs?
Dallas, Austin, and Houston hold the most legal counsel openings in Texas. Houston's dominance in energy, petrochemicals, and healthcare drives the largest share of in-house demand, while Dallas is a hub for financial services, technology, and retail headquarters, and Austin's rapid expansion in tech and government contracting has made it one of the fastest-growing markets for in-house counsel roles.
Are there remote legal counsel jobs in Texas?
Yes, and more than many legal roles allow. About 27% of legal counsel openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves document review, contract negotiation, and advisory functions that translate well to distributed settings. Regulatory and compliance counsel roles, in particular, are frequently listed as remote or hybrid across Texas employers.
How can I get hired as a legal counsel in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a summer associate or post-graduate fellowship program at a Texas law firm or a structured rotation inside a large in-house legal department. Major Texas employers such as energy companies, health systems, and technology firms regularly hire recent State Bar of Texas admittees into junior counsel or legal analyst roles. Candidates who have clerked for a Texas state or federal court, or who come from adjacent roles such as paralegal or contracts administrator, gain a practical edge when applying for their first in-house position.
Where can I find and apply to legal counsel jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to legal counsel jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings from employers across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your practice area, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
