Licensed Veterinary Technician Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a licensed veterinary technician in New York?
To become a licensed veterinary technician in New York, you must graduate from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program, pass the Veterinary Technician National Examination, and apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions. New York issues a formal state license, which is required to practice legally, and it must be renewed every three years with continuing education completed.
How much do licensed veterinary technicians make in New York?
Licensed veterinary technicians in New York earn a median of about $59,010 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,640 for the lowest 10% to over $78,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire licensed veterinary technicians in New York?
Employers hiring licensed veterinary technicians in New York right now include PetVet Care Centers, BluePearl Pet Hospital, and Destination Pet, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's mix of urban specialty hospitals, university-affiliated practices, and large zoo institutions means openings appear across a broader range of employer types than in most other states.
Which New York cities have the most licensed veterinary technician jobs?
New York, West Islip, and Brooklyn have the most licensed veterinary technician openings in New York. New York City drives the largest share of listings because of its high concentration of specialty and emergency hospitals, research centers, and institutions like the Animal Medical Center, while Buffalo and Albany reflect the general veterinary clinic and university hospital infrastructure of their respective metro areas.
Are there remote licensed veterinary technician jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Licensed veterinary technician work is almost entirely hands-on, requiring direct patient care that cannot be performed remotely. About 0% of licensed veterinary technician openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be in veterinary telehealth triage, client communication support, or administrative coordination rather than clinical care.
How can I get hired as a licensed veterinary technician in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for veterinary assistant or kennel technician roles at large New York clinic groups or emergency hospitals, which frequently promote internally once you obtain your state license. Employers like BluePearl and Cornell University Veterinary Specialists run new-graduate programs that provide mentored clinical hours. Completing your NYSED licensure while working in a support role gives you a direct competitive edge over unlicensed candidates at the same sites.
Where can I find and apply to licensed veterinary technician jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to licensed veterinary technician jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly to the ones that match.
