Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health nurse practitioner in New York?
You must earn a graduate degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing, either an MSN or DNP with a psychiatric-mental health NP focus, and then pass the PMHNP-BC exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the PMHNP certification through AANP. New York licensure is granted by the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions, which requires submitting your degree, certification, and RN history. New York also requires a collaborative practice agreement with a physician for prescriptive authority during your first few years of practice.
How much do mental health nurse practitioners make in New York?
Mental health nurse practitioners in New York earn a median of about $153,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $112,730 for the lowest 10% to over $198,060 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mental health nurse practitioners in New York?
Employers hiring mental health nurse practitioners in New York right now include Cordial health, Mensana Center, and TeamHealth, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. New York's large integrated health systems and its extensive network of federally qualified health centers make it one of the most employer-diverse states for this role in the country.
Which New York cities have the most mental health nurse practitioner jobs?
New York, Bronx, and Utica have the most mental health nurse practitioner openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of major health systems, community mental health centers, and public hospital networks, while Buffalo and Albany generate consistent demand through regional academic medical centers and state-administered behavioral health programs serving upstate populations.
Are there remote mental health nurse practitioner jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're limited compared to fully desk-based roles, since most mental health nurse practitioner work involves direct patient assessment and medication management. About 67% of mental health nurse practitioner openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting growth in telehealth platforms and telepsychiatry programs. The portions of the role most amenable to remote work are medication management follow-ups and talk-therapy focused visits conducted through New York-licensed telehealth providers.
How can I get hired as a mental health nurse practitioner in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new graduate or transition-to-practice residency programs, which NYC Health and Hospitals and Northwell Health run specifically for newly certified PMHNPs. Lateral moves from RN roles in inpatient psychiatry or crisis stabilization units are common, since that clinical background satisfies many New York employers when formal NP experience is absent. Holding an active New York collaborative practice agreement and PMHNP-BC certification on day one is the credential combination that makes new graduates most competitive at community mental health centers and outpatient clinics across the state.
Where can I find and apply to mental health nurse practitioner jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to mental health nurse practitioner jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find the roles that match your qualifications and preferred setting, and apply directly to each one without any intermediate steps.
