Medical Social Worker Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical social worker in New York?
You must earn a Master of Social Work from a CSWE-accredited program and then apply for licensure through the New York State Education Department Office of the Professions. New York offers two clinical tiers: the LMSW for post-graduate candidates and the LCSW for those who complete supervised post-master's hours. Most hospital employers in New York require at minimum an LMSW at hire, with expectation of LCSW pursuit.

New York's large integrated health systems and public hospital networks tend to post the most consistent volume, particularly for roles in acute care and case management.
Which New York cities have the most medical social worker jobs?

New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of major academic medical centers, public hospital networks, and specialty care institutions, while Buffalo and Albany reflect strong regional health systems and state agency demand anchoring those markets.

How can I get hired as a medical social worker in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to field placement-to-hire pipelines at large New York health systems, many of which convert MSW interns into paid staff. NewYork-Presbyterian, Northwell Health, and NYC Health + Hospitals all run new-graduate onboarding tracks for inpatient social work roles. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as care manager, case coordinator, or patient navigator can also step across once they hold an LMSW, and having that license in hand before applying gives a meaningful edge.
