Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mental health nurse practitioner in Texas?
You must earn a graduate-level nursing degree, either a Master of Science in Nursing or a Doctor of Nursing Practice, with a psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner concentration, then pass a national certification exam through the American Nurses Credentialing Center or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board. After passing the exam, you apply for APRN licensure through the Texas Board of Nursing and establish a prescriptive authority agreement with a collaborating physician or podiatrist as required under Texas law.
How much do mental health nurse practitioners make in Texas?
Mental health nurse practitioners in Texas earn a median of about $131,670 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $96,880 for the lowest 10% to over $161,980 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mental health nurse practitioners in Texas?
Employers hiring mental health nurse practitioners in Texas right now include Texas A&M University, LifeStance Health, and Baylor Scott & White Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's large integrated health systems, federally qualified health centers, and growing network of outpatient behavioral health clinics collectively account for the majority of open roles across the state.
Which Texas cities have the most mental health nurse practitioner jobs?
Bryan, Crockett, and Austin have the most mental health nurse practitioner openings in Texas. Houston and Dallas lead because of the concentration of large academic medical centers, multi-site hospital systems, and community mental health authorities headquartered there, while San Antonio's significant military population and VA infrastructure drive steady demand for psychiatric advanced practice clinicians.
Are there remote mental health nurse practitioner jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because most psychiatric nurse practitioner work involves direct clinical assessment and prescribing. About 20% of mental health nurse practitioner openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions are concentrated in telehealth platforms and collaborative care programs where synchronous video visits satisfy clinical requirements without requiring an in-person site.
How can I get hired as a mental health nurse practitioner in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate PMHNP residency or fellowship, and several large Texas employers including UTHealth Houston and Baylor Scott and White Health offer structured post-graduate training programs designed for clinicians without independent practice experience. Candidates who hold a current Texas APRN license and PMHNP certification before applying move through screening faster. Lateral moves from registered nursing roles in inpatient psychiatry or crisis stabilization units are another common bridge, as that clinical background satisfies many employers' competency requirements even without prior NP-level experience.
Where can I find and apply to mental health nurse practitioner jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mental health nurse practitioner jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to Texas employers. Find the roles that fit your credentials and location, then apply directly through the listings.
