Sonographer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sonographer in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued sonography license, but virtually all Texas employers require national certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). To qualify, you complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program, which can be an associate or bachelor's degree, and pass the relevant registry exam. Many Texas community colleges and universities, including programs at Houston Community College and UT Health San Antonio, offer accredited pathways.
How much do sonographers make in Texas?
Sonographers in Texas earn a median of about $92,580 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $64,360 for the lowest 10% to over $106,090 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sonographers in Texas?
Employers hiring sonographers in Texas right now include Baylor Scott & White Health, Houston Methodist, and Ascension, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's dense concentration of large academic medical centers and regional health systems means consistent openings across both inpatient and outpatient settings throughout the state.
Which Texas cities have the most sonographer jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Temple have the most sonographer openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its large medical center complex, which is one of the largest in the world, while Dallas and San Antonio draw significant volume from major regional health systems and growing suburban hospital campuses serving fast-expanding populations.
Are there remote sonographer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of sonographer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on, patient-contact nature of most ultrasound work. The portion of the role most suited to remote or hybrid arrangements is tele-ultrasound quality review or image interpretation support, not direct patient scanning.
How can I get hired as a sonographer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate or limited-experience positions posted directly by large Texas health systems such as Houston Methodist, Baylor Scott and White, or HCA Houston Healthcare, which periodically run structured sonography residency or clinical training programs for recently credentialed candidates. Lateral moves from roles such as cardiac monitor technician, medical imaging assistant, or ultrasound tech aide give you documented clinical exposure that strengthens an application. Completing your ARDMS registry exam before applying, even without full-time experience, gives you a clear credential advantage over uncertified candidates.
Where can I find and apply to sonographer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to sonographer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings updated regularly. Find the roles that fit your specialty and experience level and apply directly to each one.
