Sonographer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sonographer in Virginia?
Virginia does not require a state-issued sonographer license, but virtually all employers require a nationally recognized credential such as ARDMS, CCI, or ARRT registration before hiring. You first complete an accredited diagnostic medical sonography program, typically an associate or bachelor's degree from a CAAHEP-accredited school. After graduating, you sit for the relevant specialty exam and obtain your credential, which is what Virginia employers use to verify competency.
How much do sonographers make in Virginia?
Sonographers in Virginia earn a median of about $95,660 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,540 for the lowest 10% to over $122,930 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire sonographers in Virginia?
Employers hiring sonographers in Virginia right now include University of Virginia, Inova Health System, and VCU Health System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's large integrated health systems, including those with academic medical centers and regional community hospitals, tend to post the steadiest volume of openings.
Which Virginia cities have the most sonographer jobs?
Richmond, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville have the most sonographer openings in Virginia right now. Northern Virginia and Richmond lead because of their dense concentration of major health systems, academic medical centers, and specialty imaging practices, while Hampton Roads reflects the large military and civilian hospital presence anchored by Sentara Healthcare and regional outpatient networks.
Are there remote sonographer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're rare. About 0% of sonographer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, which reflects the hands-on, patient-facing nature of the work. The narrow remote segment mostly covers tele-review roles where credentialed sonographers interpret archived studies or provide quality oversight rather than performing live scans.
How can I get hired as a sonographer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a new-grad or sonographer trainee position directly at a large Virginia health system, where Inova Health System and Sentara Healthcare have onboarded recent graduates into structured orientation programs. Candidates who completed clinical rotations at a Virginia facility and hold a current ARDMS registry have a clear advantage. Lateral moves from related roles such as radiologic technologist or patient care technician can also open doors, especially at facilities willing to cross-train credentialed imaging staff into sonography.
Where can I find and apply to sonographer jobs in Virginia?
