Clinical Social Worker Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a clinical social worker in Virginia?
To become a clinical social worker in Virginia, you must earn a Master of Social Work degree from a CSWE-accredited program, complete the required supervised clinical hours, and pass the ASWB Clinical Level exam. Licensure is granted by the Virginia Board of Social Work as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). Most Virginia employers require an active LCSW before independent practice, though some will hire candidates working toward licensure under a Supervisory Agreement.
Which companies hire clinical social workers in Virginia?
Employers hiring clinical social workers in Virginia right now include University of Virginia, Thriveworks, and Aevum Behavioral Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's large integrated health systems, Veterans Affairs medical centers, and community behavioral health organizations are among the most consistent sources of full-time clinical social worker openings across the state.
Which Virginia cities have the most clinical social worker jobs?
Charlottesville, Norfolk, and Richmond have the most clinical social worker openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia's concentration of hospitals, federal agencies, and behavioral health practices drives much of the volume there, while Richmond's role as the state capital brings together major health systems and state-funded community mental health centers, and Virginia Beach reflects the large military and Veterans Affairs presence along the Hampton Roads corridor.
Are there remote clinical social worker jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields, since many clinical social worker roles involve in-person therapy, hospital rounds, or school-based services. About 67% of clinical social worker openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with telehealth counseling and care coordination positions being the most likely to offer fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a clinical social worker in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for positions that accept candidates working toward LCSW licensure under supervision, which many Virginia hospital systems and community mental health centers explicitly support. Inova, Sentara, and Virginia's Community Services Boards regularly bring on clinicians at the Licensed Social Worker (LSW) or pre-licensure stage and provide the required supervision hours. Moving into a clinical role from adjacent positions such as case manager, social services aide, or psychiatric technician is another common route, and completing a practicum or field placement at a Virginia employer significantly improves hiring prospects.
Where can I find and apply to clinical social worker jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to clinical social worker jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers hiring in the state right now. Find roles that fit your experience and credentials and apply directly through each listing.
