Tips for Your Managing Director Job Search
Quantify your P&L ownership clearly
Managing director candidates who name the exact revenue, budget, or headcount they oversaw move faster through screening than those who use vague terms like 'led large teams.' Pull specific figures from your annual reviews or financial reports and put them front and center on your resume.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists managing director openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Tailor your resume to each sector
A managing director resume for a private equity-backed firm reads differently than one for a healthcare system or a media company. Reframe your accomplishments in the language each sector uses: EBITDA growth for finance, patient outcomes or cost-per-case for healthcare, audience metrics for media.
Build a board-ready narrative beforehand
At this level, interviewers often ask how you present strategy to a board or executive committee. Prepare two or three examples where you translated operational complexity into a clear executive recommendation. Showing you can manage up is as important as managing down.
Negotiate scope before salary in final rounds
Managing director offers hinge on budget authority, headcount control, and reporting lines as much as base compensation. Before the final conversation, clarify what P&L you will own and how many direct reports you will have. Misaligned scope is the most common reason managing directors leave within 18 months.
Follow up with a 90-day plan after interviews
Sending a brief 90-day plan to your interview panel within 48 hours of a final-round meeting signals strategic readiness and seriousness. Outline the three priorities you would focus on in your first quarter based on what you learned during the process. Most managing director candidates skip this step entirely.
Managing Director Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most managing directors?
The companies hiring the most managing directors right now include BDO, KPMG, and CBIZ, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to be highest in financial services, healthcare systems, and large professional services firms.
How many managing director jobs are remote?
About 27% of managing director openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with most on-site requirements tied to operational roles that oversee physical locations or large in-person teams. Managing directors in strategy, business development, and client advisory functions are most likely to have remote or hybrid flexibility.
How do you become a managing director?
Most managing directors move up through director or VP-level roles after consistently owning a measurable business outcome, such as a product line, regional market, or client portfolio. Building a record of growing revenue, leading through organizational change, and influencing at the executive level matters more than any single credential. An MBA can accelerate the path in finance and consulting, but operational results carry more weight in most industries.
Can you get hired as a managing director without prior experience at that level?
Getting hired as a managing director without the exact title on your resume is possible if you can show you have functionally done the work. Candidates who have led a significant P&L, managed a team through a major transition, or owned a strategic initiative end-to-end are seriously considered even without the formal designation. Targeting companies going through growth, restructuring, or a leadership transition increases your chances because those organizations often promote based on demonstrated capability rather than title history.
What does the managing director interview process look like?
The managing director interview process typically runs four to six rounds and includes a screening call with HR, competency interviews with the hiring executive and cross-functional peers, a case study or strategic presentation, and a final conversation with senior leadership or a board member. References and background checks are thorough at this level. The presentation round, where you are asked to diagnose a business problem and present a recommendation, is often the deciding stage.
Where can I find and apply to managing director jobs?
You can find and apply to managing director jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your industry background, seniority level, and functional focus, then apply directly to each one that fits.
