Mechanical Engineering Intern Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical engineering intern in Alabama?
The clearest path is enrollment in an ABET-accredited mechanical engineering program at an Alabama university such as Auburn University, the University of Alabama, or the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Alabama does not require state licensure for intern-level roles, but completing relevant coursework in thermodynamics, mechanics, and CAD before applying makes candidates significantly more competitive with the state's aerospace, automotive, and defense employers.
Which companies hire mechanical engineering interns in Alabama?
Employers hiring mechanical engineering interns in Alabama right now include CVS Health, Republic Finance, and UAB Medicine, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's concentration of aerospace primes, automotive assembly plants, and defense contractors means intern demand runs year-round rather than only in summer cycles.
Which Alabama cities have the most mechanical engineering intern jobs?
Huntsville, Birmingham, and Mobile consistently post the most mechanical engineering intern openings in Alabama. Huntsville's role as a national aerospace and defense hub drives the largest share of postings, while Birmingham's diversified manufacturing and engineering services base and Mobile's shipbuilding and aviation maintenance sector account for much of the remaining demand.
Are there remote mechanical engineering intern jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're rare. About 29% of mechanical engineering intern openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most intern assignments. The portions of the role most likely to allow remote or hybrid arrangements are simulation work, CAD modeling, and data analysis tasks that don't require direct access to physical equipment or production lines.
How can I get hired as a mechanical engineering intern in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is applying to structured internship programs run directly by large Alabama employers, including Boeing's early-career technical programs in Huntsville, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama's cooperative education program in Montgomery, and Austal USA's intern pipeline in Mobile. University career fairs at Auburn, UA, and UAH put candidates in front of these recruiters directly. Completing a strong SolidWorks or CATIA project portfolio, even from coursework, gives applicants a concrete edge over candidates with no design portfolio.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineering intern jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alabama openings across aerospace, automotive, defense, and manufacturing employers. Search the listings, find the roles that match your background and location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
