Principal Project Engineer – Pipeline & Flow Assurance
Denver, CO
Purpose of the Role
The Principal Project Engineer – Pipeline Engineer & Flow Assurance is responsible for leading the technical delivery and coordination of pipeline projects and flow assurance scope within EPC projects. This role integrates pipeline engineering design with hydraulic and flow assurance expertise to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable transport of fluids across pipeline systems.
You will serve as a key interface between engineering disciplines, project management, and clients, ensuring that pipeline engineering and flow assurance solutions are optimized for operability, integrity, regulatory requirements, and lifecycle performance while meeting cost and schedule objectives.
This position is based in Englewood, Colorado and follows a 3-day hybrid schedule at the Worley office. Remote work is not available.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering and technical delivery of pipeline systems, including routing, sizing, materials selection, and design for onshore and offshore projects.
- Perform and oversee hydraulic and flow assurance studies, including steady-state and transient analysis, to ensure system operability under all conditions.
- Evaluate multiphase flow behavior, pressure drop, temperature profiles, slugging, and hydrate/wax formation risks, and develop mitigation strategies.
- Define and support pipeline design basis, including design codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Coordinate closely with process, mechanical, and facilities engineering teams to ensure integrated system design.
- Support the development of PFDs, P&IDs, hydraulic profiles, and pipeline alignment sheets.
- Provide technical input into equipment sizing (pumps, compressors, pigging facilities, valves) based on hydraulic and flow assurance requirements.
- Lead or support design reviews, HAZOPs, and risk assessments related to pipeline integrity, pipeline design and flow assurance.
- Interface with procurement and construction teams to ensure design intent is maintained through fabrication and installation.
- Review and validate vendor data, calculations, and deliverables for compliance with project requirements.
- Support construction, commissioning, and startup activities, including troubleshooting flow-related issues.
- Act as a technical mentor to junior engineers and provide guidance on best practices and standards.
Project & Stakeholder Responsibilities
- Serve as a key technical point of contact for clients on pipeline engineering and flow assurance matters.
- Support project planning, scheduling, and cost tracking for pipeline engineering scope.
- Identify technical risks and develop mitigation strategies to support project delivery.
- Contribute to proposals, estimates, and execution strategies for pipeline and flow assurance work.
- Ensure all deliverables are completed in accordance with project quality requirements and timelines.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering discipline preferred.
- Typically 15+ years of experience in pipeline engineering and flow assurance within an EPC or energy environment.
- Strong experience with onshore pipeline engineering and design, including codes such as ASME B31.4/B31.8, CFR 192, CFR 195, etc.
- Proven expertise in hydraulic analysis and flow assurance, including multiphase flow systems.
- Hands-on experience with industry software (e.g., OLGA, PIPEPHASE, PIPESIM, or similar).
- Understanding of thermal management, hydrate control, wax/asphaltene mitigation, and pigging strategies.
- Experience supporting full project lifecycle from concept through FEED, detailed design, and execution.
- Strong interdisciplinary coordination skills and ability to integrate process and mechanical requirements.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical capabilities with attention to detail.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to interface with clients and internal stakeholders.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred or ability to obtain quickly.
- Willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Compensation & Benefits (Colorado Applicants)
- Salary Range: $167,164 - $210,830 annually, commensurate with experience.
