MEI is a multi-discipline MEP engineering consulting firm with offices in Harrisonburg and Charlottesville, Virginia. We specialize in mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems design and related consulting services for buildings. With continued growth, we are currently looking to expand our design team in order to meet our clients' needs and schedules. With 10 full-time and 4 part-time employees, we are a small family-oriented, supportive firm with a close-knit, positive, and fun atmosphere where each employee is treated as an individual.

Job Description/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will lead HVAC and plumbing design for commercial and industrial building projects, from initial evaluation through construction and project close-out. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Conducting field surveys to document existing conditions and meeting with clients to establish project requirements
• Evaluating applicable codes, performing load calculations, developing system concepts, and coordinating design approaches with clients and other design disciplines
• Selecting and sizing equipment, developing system layouts, preparing drawings, specifications, and supporting calculations for bidding, permitting, and construction
• Managing assigned project schedules and reviewing design documents for accuracy, completeness, and coordination throughout the design process
• Responding to permit review comments and bidding questions, and preparing clarifications and addenda as needed
• Providing construction-phase support, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, attending project meetings, conducting site observations, and troubleshooting field issues
• Supporting project close-out through final site observations, preparation of punch-list items, and review of applicable contractor close-out documentation

Requirements/Skills

• Minimum 10 years of relevant HVAC and plumbing design experience; 15 or more years preferred
• Working knowledge of the applicable International Mechanical Code, International Plumbing Code, International Building Code, and International Energy Conservation Code
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel is required. Proficiency with Wrightsoft is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable using these programs to develop and coordinate drawings and models, perform HVAC load calculations, prepare engineering spreadsheets, and produce specifications and other project documentation.
• Ongoing collaboration with other members of the MEI team is expected throughout each project

Travel is generally within Virginia and neighboring states, with most trips completed during the workday.

This position will be based in our new Charlottesville office, with ongoing collaboration and technical support from our Harrisonburg team. Onboarding and training will include a short period at our Harrisonburg office. Initially, the successful candidate will generally be the only employee working regularly from the Charlottesville office, with the firm's president onsite approximately one to two days per week. We anticipate adding engineering staff as the office grows. Administrative support will remain based in Harrisonburg. This position will include occasional routine office tasks, such as receiving mail and deliveries and greeting visitors.

Our projects encompass a wide range of building types and design challenges. The successful candidate will be comfortable working independently, exercising sound engineering judgment, and collaborating with colleagues to develop solutions for unfamiliar or complex conditions. A willingness to continue learning and share expertise with others is essential. As the Charlottesville office grows, opportunities may include mentoring additional engineering staff.

Position Hours

Full-time position with a typical 40-hour workweek; additional hours may occasionally be needed to meet project deadlines.

Salary

$85,000 - $115,000 base salary annually, based on relevant experience and qualifications. Additional performance bonuses are typically paid quarterly, depending on company profits.
