Medical Assistant Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical assistant in Missouri?
Missouri does not require a state license to work as a medical assistant, but most employers strongly prefer candidates who hold a nationally recognized credential such as the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants or the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) through American Medical Technologists. To earn either credential, you typically complete an accredited medical assistant program at a community college or vocational school in Missouri, then pass a national certification exam.
How much do medical assistants make in Missouri?
Medical assistants in Missouri earn a median of about $40,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $35,810 for the lowest 10% to over $48,360 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire medical assistants in Missouri?
Missouri medical assistant roles are posted by SSM Health, Mercy, and Saint Luke's and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Missouri's large integrated health systems and independent physician groups generate the most consistent volume of openings.
Which Missouri cities have the most medical assistant jobs?
St. Louis, Springfield, and Kansas City have the most medical assistant openings in Missouri. Kansas City and St. Louis drive the bulk of postings because of the large hospital systems, multispecialty clinics, and academic medical centers headquartered in those metros, while Springfield's concentration of Mercy Health and CoxHealth facilities makes it a strong secondary market for the role.
Are there remote medical assistant jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical assisting is a hands-on clinical role centered on direct patient care, so most positions require on-site work at a clinic or health system. About 17% of medical assistant openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, and those tend to involve administrative or telehealth support functions rather than clinical duties.
How can I get hired as a medical assistant in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is completing an accredited medical assistant program at a Missouri community college, such as those offered through St. Louis Community College or State Fair Community College, then applying to externship or new-grad positions at health systems like Mercy Health or BJC HealthCare that regularly bring on entry-level candidates from local programs. Lateral moves from patient service representative, medical receptionist, or phlebotomy technician roles are also a common door into clinical medical assistant work. Earning a CMA or RMA credential before applying gives candidates a measurable edge over those without certification.
Where can I find and apply to medical assistant jobs in Missouri?
You can find and apply to medical assistant jobs in Missouri on Migrate Mate, which lists current Missouri openings from employers across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly.
