Medical Laboratory Scientist Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a medical laboratory scientist in New York?
To work as a medical laboratory scientist in New York, you must hold a New York State clinical laboratory technologist license issued by the New York State Department of Health. Licensure requires a bachelor's degree in medical laboratory science or a related biological science from an accredited program, plus documented clinical training hours. Most candidates also sit for the ASCP Board of Certification exam, which New York employers widely expect even though the state license is the legal requirement for practice.
Which companies hire medical laboratory scientists in New York?
Employers hiring medical laboratory scientists in New York right now include NYU Langone Health, University of Rochester, and Columbia University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's density of large academic medical centers and integrated health systems means openings appear year-round rather than seasonally, giving candidates consistent hiring windows.
Which New York cities have the most medical laboratory scientist jobs?
New York, Rochester, and Ithaca have the most medical laboratory scientist openings in New York. New York City dominates the distribution because of its concentration of major hospital systems, academic medical centers, and high-volume reference laboratories, while Buffalo and Albany generate steady demand through regional health systems and state public health laboratory operations serving their surrounding populations.
Are there remote medical laboratory scientist jobs in New York?
Yes, but they're rare. Medical laboratory science is fundamentally a hands-on, specimen-based role that requires physical presence in a certified laboratory, so most positions are fully on-site. About 6% of medical laboratory scientist openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve laboratory informatics, data analysis, or quality management functions rather than direct specimen processing.
How can I get hired as a medical laboratory scientist in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a laboratory assistant or phlebotomist role at a large New York hospital system, which gives you direct exposure to laboratory workflows while you complete or have recently completed your degree. NewYork-Presbyterian, Northwell Health, and NYC Health and Hospitals all post new-graduate medical laboratory scientist positions and support candidates moving from adjacent roles into full scientist positions. Having your New York State clinical laboratory technologist license in hand before applying is the single strongest credential advantage for candidates without prior scientist experience.
Where can I find and apply to medical laboratory scientist jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to medical laboratory scientist jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the listings for roles that match your specialty, experience level, and preferred location across the state, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
