Position Summary
The Mental Health Clinician provides direct mental health services to University of Minnesota students through Boynton Health’s Mental Health Clinic, https://boynton.umn.edu/. This position delivers psychotherapy, assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, crisis intervention, consultation, and care coordination for a broad range of emotional, behavioral, relational, and mental health concerns. Services are provided in person and via telehealth using a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and student-centered approach.
The clinician works collaboratively with Boynton Health mental health, psychiatry, and medical teams to support student well-being, improve access to care, respond to urgent mental health needs, and promote continuity of services. This role manages an independent clinical caseload and contributes to a collaborative, inclusive, and team-based care environment. This position may be filled by a licensed mental health professional with one of the following Minnesota independent licenses: LICSW, LMFT, or LPCC. This position works primarily on-site/in-person.
Overview of Job Responsibilities
- Provide outpatient mental health services to students in person and via telehealth, including psychotherapy, counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, care coordination, and referral support.
- Conduct screening assessments, diagnostic interviews, psychosocial evaluations, and other clinically appropriate assessments to identify treatment needs, clarify diagnoses, and determine appropriate levels of care.
- Diagnose and treat a broad range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, adjustment concerns, identity development, relationship concerns, family-of-origin issues, substance use, eating concerns, and other acute or chronic mental health conditions.
- Develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans based on assessment findings, student needs, and clinical goals.
- Provide evidence-based and clinically appropriate interventions consistent with licensure, training, and clinic needs.
- Respond to urgent, high-risk, and rapidly changing clinical situations, including emotional crises, safety concerns, and acute mental health needs.
- Coordinate care with psychiatrists, primary care providers, case managers, other Boynton clinicians, and external providers as clinically indicated.
- Address environmental, relational, or systems-related barriers that may interfere with treatment progress or access to care, and connect students with appropriate resources and support services.
- Practice in accordance with professional ethics, licensing standards, Boynton Health policies, University policies, and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Team Collaboration, Training, and Program Support (25%)
- Collaborate with mental health clinicians, psychiatry, primary care, nursing, case management, and other Boynton staff to support integrated student care.
- Participate in case consultation, interdisciplinary care planning, and team-based problem solving.
- Provide education and support to students, trainees, and colleagues regarding mental health concerns, coping strategies, and available resources.
- Document clinical services in the electronic medical record, including assessments, progress notes, treatment plans, referrals, and discharge/transition documentation.
- Participate in the training, supervision, mentoring, or clinical education of trainees, interns, practicum students, or pre-licensed clinicians, as assigned.
- Contribute to outreach, workshops, training, and other programming related to student mental health and well-being.
- Participate in department and University meetings, trainings, committees, and quality improvement efforts, as assigned.
- Support a safe, equitable, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, trainees, and colleagues.
- Participate in urgent coverage, end-of-day coverage, after-hours support needs, or campus-wide mental health response efforts, as assigned.
Additional Responsibilities
- Maintain current professional licensure and required continuing education.
- Remain current on best practices, clinical trends, and emerging issues affecting college student mental health.
- Support clinic operations, workflow improvements, and initiatives that enhance access to care, continuity of services, and student experience.
Contribute to Boynton Health’s commitment to inclusive excellence, student-centered care, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the position and department needs.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, or a closely related mental health field, plus at least four (4) years of related professional experience; or terminal degree plus at least one (1) year of related professional experience; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience consistent with University requirements.

Current independent Minnesota licensure as one of the following:
- Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
- Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)
- Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC)
- Experience providing psychotherapy/counseling, mental health assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and crisis intervention.
- Experience with clinical documentation, care coordination, and interdisciplinary collaboration in a mental health or healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively in a team-based clinical environment.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing equitable, inclusive, culturally responsive care to individuals from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and standard clinical technology tools.
- Ability to work on site and in person between the hours of 7:30 AM - 5:00 PM, days and hours may vary (40 hours per week on average).
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience providing mental health services in a college counseling center, university health service, or other young adult/student-focused setting.
- Experience in a multicultural, integrated healthcare, or community mental health setting.
- Experience working with students or young adults experiencing trauma, eating disorders, substance use concerns, identity development concerns, relationship concerns, or acute mental health crises.
- Experience with mental health diagnostic testing, structured assessments, or evidence-based screening tools.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or training graduate trainees, practicum students, interns, or pre-licensed clinicians.
- Bi/multilingual skills.
