Tips for Your Neonatologist Job Search
Tailor your CV for neonatology positions
Lead your CV with board certification status, fellowship training program, and any level III or IV NICU experience. Hiring committees scan for case volume breadth and specific procedural competencies like intubation, ECMO, and umbilical line placement before reading anything else.
Target openings by NICU level first
Filter your search by NICU designation before unit size or location. Level IV centers expect subspecialty fellowship training and complex surgical co-management experience, while level II and III units often prioritize general neonatology competency and outreach coverage availability.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists neonatologist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight quality and research contributions
Academic and large health system postings frequently score candidates on QI project leadership and peer-reviewed publications. List any research you contributed to during fellowship, including poster presentations, even if you weren't the primary author, to stand apart from clinical-only applicants.
Prepare for a multi-stage interview format
Neonatology interviews typically include a grand rounds or case presentation, a tour with the NICU nursing leadership, and separate meetings with division chiefs and department chairs. Know your presentation topic cold and prepare questions about call structure and fellow supervision expectations.
Negotiate call schedule before signing
Call frequency varies widely between private practice hospital-employed roles and academic positions. Before accepting, clarify the number of night and weekend shifts per month, how post-call days are structured, and whether APP or fellow coverage reduces your overnight burden.
Neonatologist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most neonatologists?
The companies hiring the most neonatologists right now include Pediatrix Medical, Indiana University Health, and Connecticut Children's, with the largest share of openings in Florida, Texas, and Virginia, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is generally highest at large health systems and children's hospital networks that operate level III and level IV NICUs.
How many neonatologist jobs are remote?
About 0% of neonatologist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, since the role is primarily clinical and requires direct bedside care. The sub-areas with the greatest remote potential are tele-neonatology consultation roles, where neonatologists provide real-time video guidance to level I and level II facilities without on-site intensivists.
How do you become a neonatologist?
You become a neonatologist by completing a four-year medical degree, followed by a three-year accredited pediatric residency, then a three-year neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. After fellowship, you sit for the subspecialty board examination through the American Board of Pediatrics and obtain a medical license in the state where you plan to practice.
Can you get a neonatologist job with limited clinical experience?
Most hiring neonatologist roles expect fellowship completion as the baseline, so graduating fellows are considered entry-level rather than inexperienced candidates. If you're transitioning from a general pediatrics background without fellowship training, pursuing a neonatal-perinatal medicine fellowship is the direct path. Some level II hospital-employed positions will consider candidates with strong NICU rotation exposure if ABP fellowship exam eligibility is clearly on track.
What does the neonatologist interview process look like?
A typical neonatologist interview runs across one or two days and includes an initial phone or video screening with a physician recruiter or division chief, followed by an on-site visit that combines a clinical or grand rounds presentation, individual meetings with attending neonatologists and department leadership, a NICU and facility tour, and a session with human resources to review contract structure and benefits.
Where can I find and apply to neonatologist jobs?
You can find and apply to neonatologist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your training level, NICU experience, and preferred location, then apply directly to each position that fits.
