Network Administrator Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a network administrator in California?
California does not require a state-issued license for network administrators, so entry depends on education and industry-recognized certifications. Most California employers expect at least an associate or bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, or a related field, combined with certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, or Microsoft Certified Network Associate. Community colleges throughout California offer networking programs that pair well with entry-level positions.
How much do network administrators make in California?
Network administrators in California earn a median of about $106,440 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,400 for the lowest 10% to over $166,730 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire network administrators in California?
Employers hiring network administrators in California right now include Family HealthCare Network, Heritage Provider Network, and Amazon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology firms, large healthcare systems, and defense contractors means consistent demand from both private sector companies and public institutions such as the University of California system and state agencies.
Which California cities have the most network administrator jobs?
West Hills, Santa Clara, and Visalia have the most network administrator openings in California. The Bay Area's density of technology headquarters and enterprise software companies drives the highest volume, while Los Angeles draws demand from media, aerospace, and healthcare networks, and San Diego's openings are concentrated in defense contractors and biotech firms with large on-premise infrastructure needs.
Are there remote network administrator jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based roles because network administrators frequently need physical access to hardware, data centers, and on-site equipment. About 13% of network administrator openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that are remote tend to involve cloud infrastructure management, network monitoring, or documentation work rather than hands-on cabling and device configuration.
How can I get hired as a network administrator in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving from a help desk or IT support role into network administration once you have exposure to routing and switching fundamentals. California community college districts offer networking certificate programs aligned with Cisco and CompTIA exams, and large California employers like Kaiser Permanente and county government IT departments regularly post junior network technician or IT associate roles that do not require prior networking experience. Earning CompTIA Network+ before applying gives candidates a measurable edge.
