How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Advertising
Target agencies with dedicated international hiring programs
Large holding companies like WPP, Omnicom, Publicis, and IPG have established processes for sponsoring OPT and H-1B workers. Smaller independent agencies often lack the infrastructure, so prioritize companies with documented sponsorship history.
Frame your role as a specialty occupation from day one
Advertising positions need to qualify as specialty occupations for visa sponsorship. Emphasize the specific degree requirement your role demands, whether that is marketing, communications, data science, or a closely related field, in all application materials.
Position yourself for STEM OPT if your track qualifies
Roles focused on programmatic advertising, marketing analytics, or ad technology often fall under STEM-designated CIP codes. Confirm your degree classification with your DSO early so you can pursue the 24-month STEM extension before your initial OPT expires.
Build a portfolio that demonstrates measurable business outcomes
Advertising employers sponsor candidates who show ROI, not just creative flair. Quantify campaign results, such as engagement lifts, conversion rates, or cost-per-acquisition improvements, to signal the specialized value that justifies sponsorship investment from a hiring manager.
Understand your OPT start date relative to your offer timeline
OPT authorization can take 90 or more days to process. Apply through your DSO as soon as you have a target start date, and communicate your authorized start date clearly to employers so offer timelines can be structured around your actual availability.
Ask directly about H-1B sponsorship before accepting an offer
Confirm the employer's willingness to sponsor H-1B status before you invest heavily in the interview process. Ask HR whether the company has sponsored international employees in your specific role or department, not just company-wide, to get an accurate answer.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do advertising jobs typically qualify for OPT work authorization?
Most advertising roles qualify for OPT as long as the position is directly related to your degree field. Account management, media planning, copywriting, and analytics roles commonly meet this standard when paired with a degree in marketing, communications, advertising, or data science. Your DSO must confirm the connection between your job and your degree before you begin work.
Can I get a STEM OPT extension working in advertising?
It depends on your specific role and degree. Positions focused on programmatic advertising, marketing analytics, or ad technology platforms can qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree falls under a STEM-designated CIP code. Creative roles like copywriting or art direction generally do not qualify. Check your degree's CIP code with your DSO to determine eligibility before accepting a role.
How do I find advertising employers willing to sponsor OPT and H-1B?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to find advertising employers that actively sponsor international candidates. Larger agency holding companies and in-house brand teams at major corporations are more likely to have existing sponsorship processes than boutique agencies. Look for employers with a track record of H-1B filings in marketing and advertising job categories, which signals genuine familiarity with the sponsorship process.
What happens if my advertising job offer falls through while I'm on OPT?
If your employment ends, you enter a 60-day unemployment grace period during your initial OPT. You must find a new qualifying position within that window or risk falling out of status. Keep your DSO informed immediately and update your SEVIS record when you secure a new role. If you are on STEM OPT, your employer must report the termination to your DSO within five business days.
Do I need my advertising employer to file any paperwork for my OPT?
For standard OPT, your employer does not file any government paperwork. You work on the strength of your EAD card, and your DSO updates your SEVIS record to reflect your employment. For STEM OPT, your employer must enroll in E-Verify and sign a formal training plan before your extension is approved. Confirm E-Verify enrollment with your employer before applying for the STEM extension.
