How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Corporate Development Manager
Target companies with active M&A pipelines
Companies executing frequent acquisitions need corporate development talent year-round. Focus your search on mid-market firms and growth-stage companies where deal volume is high and teams are lean enough that your contribution is immediately visible.
Lead with financial modeling credentials
Corporate development teams screen heavily on technical skills. Highlight specific modeling experience, such as LBO models, DCF analysis, or merger integration work, in your resume and during interviews. Concrete deal exposure, even from coursework or internships, signals readiness.
Address your OPT timeline proactively
Bring up your authorization window before employers do. Frame it as 12 months of immediate eligibility, with a potential 24-month STEM extension if applicable. Employers who understand the timeline are far more likely to sponsor you for an H-1B after.
Position strategy experience alongside deal execution
Corporate development roles blend financial analysis with strategic thinking. Emphasize projects where you assessed market opportunities, evaluated competitors, or supported growth decisions. This breadth shows you can contribute beyond spreadsheets and shortens your ramp-up time.
Network within corporate development and M&A communities
Most corporate development positions are filled through referrals or direct outreach, not open postings. Connecting with professionals already in these teams through alumni networks and industry events meaningfully increases your chances of finding OPT-friendly opportunities.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can F-1 OPT students work as Corporate Development Managers?
Yes. Corporate Development Manager roles qualify as professional positions under OPT because they require a bachelor's degree or higher in a directly related field such as finance, economics, or business administration. Your work must be directly related to your major area of study to remain compliant with OPT authorization requirements.
Do Corporate Development Manager jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
They can, depending on your degree. If you hold a STEM-designated degree such as a BS in Finance, Economics, or a related quantitative field, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Your role must also involve work that is directly related to that STEM field. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before applying for the extension.
How do I find Corporate Development Manager jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT and international students and filters job listings to surface roles at companies open to sponsoring work authorization. Searching there is more efficient than combing through general job boards, where OPT-friendliness is rarely disclosed upfront. You can browse Corporate Development Manager openings directly on the platform.
What degree backgrounds do employers expect for Corporate Development Manager roles on OPT?
Most employers expect a degree in finance, business administration, economics, or accounting, though MBA holders are common in more senior iterations of the role. For OPT compliance, what matters is that your degree field is directly related to the work you are performing. A finance degree supporting M&A analysis is a clear match. A communications degree would likely not qualify.
What should I do if a Corporate Development Manager role does not mention visa sponsorship?
Many companies that will sponsor simply do not advertise it. During the interview process, explain your OPT status, your remaining authorized period, and whether you qualify for the STEM extension. Frame the conversation around your immediate eligibility to work. Companies with prior H-1B sponsorship experience are generally more receptive once they understand the practical path forward.
