How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Shipping and Receiving Clerk
Target employers with established logistics operations
Large manufacturers, distributors, and e-commerce fulfillment centers hire shipping clerks at scale and are more familiar with OPT work authorization. Smaller operations may be less experienced with the paperwork, so prioritize companies with dedicated HR teams.
Clarify your OPT authorization early in conversations
When asked about work authorization, explain that you're authorized to work on OPT and don't require employer sponsorship for the duration of your OPT period. Many logistics employers confuse OPT with H-1B sponsorship, so a clear upfront explanation removes friction.
Connect your degree to the role explicitly
OPT requires your job to relate to your degree field. If you studied supply chain, operations, or business, spell out that connection in your cover letter. Shipping and receiving roles that involve inventory systems and logistics planning are the strongest fit.
Highlight hands-on technical skills in your application
Proficiency with warehouse management systems, barcode scanners, and inventory software strengthens your application. Many employers prioritize candidates who can step into operational workflows immediately, so lead with specific tools and systems you've used.
Track your OPT end date and plan your STEM extension early
If you're eligible for a STEM OPT extension, begin the process at least 90 days before your OPT expires. Logistics and operations roles at qualifying employers can support a 24-month extension, giving you significantly more time in the U.S. workforce.
Document how each role meets OPT's practical training requirement
Your DSO must authorize each OPT job, and USCIS can audit whether the role genuinely relates to your degree. Keep a record of your job duties and how they connect to your coursework in case your program requires documentation or verification.

Can I work as a Shipping and Receiving Clerk on F-1 OPT?
Yes, if the role relates to your degree field. A shipping and receiving clerk position qualifies for OPT when your degree is in supply chain management, logistics, operations, or a related business discipline. The job duties, such as inventory control, freight coordination, and logistics systems management, need to connect meaningfully to your field of study. Your DSO confirms the connection before authorizing the position on your SEVIS record.
Do Shipping and Receiving Clerk jobs qualify for STEM OPT extension?
Some do. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as operations research, supply chain management, or industrial engineering, and your employer is enrolled in E-Verify, you may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. The employer also needs to submit a formal training plan using Form I-983. Not every logistics role will qualify, so confirm your degree's CIP code and the employer's E-Verify status before applying for the extension.
Do employers in logistics and warehousing commonly hire OPT students?
Yes, particularly at mid-to-large operations. Companies running distribution centers, third-party logistics networks, and e-commerce fulfillment regularly hire OPT students for shipping and receiving roles. They tend to have HR infrastructure familiar with work authorization paperwork. You can browse OPT-friendly shipping and receiving positions on Migrate Mate, which filters specifically for employers open to F-1 OPT candidates.
Does a Shipping and Receiving Clerk role count as practical training related to my degree?
It depends on how closely your daily responsibilities connect to your coursework. If your degree covered topics like inventory management, supply chain operations, logistics systems, or warehouse planning, and your job duties involve those same areas, the connection is defensible. Roles that are purely manual labor with no analytical or operational component may be harder to justify. Discuss the specific job description with your DSO before accepting an offer.
What happens if my OPT expires while I'm working as a Shipping and Receiving Clerk?
You must stop working immediately if your OPT EAD expires and you don't have an approved extension or change of status. If you're eligible for a STEM OPT extension, apply at least 90 days before expiration and you can continue working while the extension is pending. If your employer is willing to sponsor an H-1B or another visa, that process takes time to plan. Don't wait until the last few weeks to assess your options.
