Summary
Headquartered in sunny Los Angeles, GrayMatter Robotics is a well-capitalized AI robotics startup serving the manufacturing industry. We empower shop floor workers with our smart robots that assist with tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks, specifically in automated surface finishing. Our proprietary GMR-AI™ software is integrated with state-of-the-art industrial robots, sensors, and tools to create application-specific turnkey solutions for customers through a Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model.
Role & Responsibilities
As a Technical Sales Representative, you will drive growth by sourcing and closing opportunities within manufacturing facilities. You will focus on identifying "high-mix, high-variability" production lines where manual surface finishing is creating labor bottlenecks or quality issues. Your goal is to move fast, educate plant managers on our "no-programming" AI technology, and demonstrate the immediate ROI of our subscription-based robotic cells.
-
Opportunity Sourcing: Proactively prospect and identify manufacturing facilities (Aerospace, Specialty Vehicle, Electrical Equipment, Defense, General Manufacturing) with demanding finishing requirements.
-
Strategic Prospecting: Through heavy site visit and in-person interactions via your networks and our marketing efforts, engage with Operations Managers, Plant Managers, and Automation Engineers.
-
Application Assessment: Visit customer sites to review manual sanding, grinding, and coating applications; identify pain points related to labor shortages, worker strain, and inconsistent quality.
-
Solution Sales: Differentiate GrayMatter’s "Physical AI" and subscription model from traditional, high-upfront-cost automation.
-
Relationship Management: Manage the full sales cycle from initial factory floor walk-through to final contract signing, ensuring a seamless handoff to our deployment team.
-
CRM & Forecasting: Maintain meticulous records of sales activities and project timelines in the CRM to ensure accurate forecasting for the sales leadership team.
-
Market Intelligence: Stay updated on industry trends in robotics and AI to act as a thought leader and consultant for prospective clients.
Minimum Qualifications
- 2–5 years of technical sales experience in industrial automation, robotics, or manufacturing equipment.
- Proven track record of meeting or exceeding sales quotas.
- Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts.
- Ability to travel locally 60–80% of the time.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to work in industrial environments.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across multiple teams.
- Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment with quickly changing priorities.
- Must have and maintain U.S. work authorization.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience in manufacturing or shop floor environments.
- Experience selling subscription-based or service-oriented solutions.
- Background collaborating with engineering or applications teams.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Technical Sales Representative
Confirm your role qualifies as a specialty occupation
Technical Sales Representative positions must require a bachelor's degree in a specific field to support H-1B sponsorship. Roles blending engineering or computer science knowledge with sales are strongest. Avoid positions where any degree field is accepted.
Leverage your technical background as a differentiator
Employers hiring for technical sales value candidates who can explain complex products credibly. Highlighting your engineering or STEM degree signals you can engage enterprise buyers, which also strengthens your specialty occupation argument for future visa sponsorship.
Clarify your OPT end date and STEM extension eligibility upfront
Let hiring managers know your authorized work period and whether you qualify for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. This gives employers a realistic sponsorship timeline and reduces uncertainty that might otherwise cause them to pass on your application.
Target mid-market and enterprise SaaS or hardware companies
Companies selling technical products to enterprise customers regularly sponsor international talent because the talent pool is competitive. These employers typically have immigration counsel on retainer and structured sponsorship pathways already in place for sales roles.
Negotiate a start date that aligns with your OPT authorization
Your OPT employment must begin within 90 days of your program end date or your authorized start date, whichever is later. Confirm your EAD card arrival timeline before accepting an offer, and build buffer time into any proposed start date.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Technical Sales Representative jobs qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, Technical Sales Representative roles qualify for OPT as long as the position is directly related to your degree field. If your degree is in engineering, computer science, or a technical discipline and the role requires that knowledge, the connection is straightforward. Your DSO can confirm the relationship between the job and your field of study before you accept an offer.
Can I get STEM OPT extension as a Technical Sales Representative?
You may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in an approved STEM field and the employer is enrolled in E-Verify. The role itself does not need to carry a STEM title, but it must utilize your STEM degree in a meaningful way. Your DSO and employer will complete a formal training plan as part of the extension application.
Do employers typically sponsor H-1B visas for Technical Sales Representatives?
Some do, particularly technology companies selling complex software or hardware products where technical expertise is genuinely required. The key is whether the role can be classified as a specialty occupation requiring a specific degree. Roles that accept any bachelor's degree regardless of field are harder to sponsor. Migrate Mate lists Technical Sales Representative jobs from employers with verified sponsorship histories, which makes filtering for realistic opportunities significantly easier.
What happens if my OPT expires before my H-1B is approved?
If your employer files your H-1B cap-subject petition before April 1 of the filing year and your OPT remains valid through October 1, you are covered under cap-gap protection. This automatically extends your OPT authorization and F-1 status through the H-1B start date. If your OPT expires before cap-gap kicks in, you cannot legally work until the extension or new authorization is in place.
How should I explain my OPT status to a recruiter for a Technical Sales role?
Be direct and factual. Tell the recruiter your OPT authorization period, whether you have a STEM extension available, and the approximate timeline to H-1B eligibility. Framing it as a defined, manageable window with a clear path forward is more effective than hedging. Many technical sales employers have sponsored international candidates before and simply need to understand the timeline to plan accordingly.
