Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Technical Solutions Engineer
Target companies with dedicated customer engineering teams
Enterprise software companies, cloud platforms, and SaaS firms run large technical solutions teams and sponsor work visas regularly. Focus your search on organizations with established pre-sales or post-sales engineering functions, where TSE hiring is recurring rather than one-off.
Lead with technical depth, not just communication skills
Hiring managers assume TSEs can talk to customers. What differentiates candidates is hands-on product knowledge. Demonstrate API experience, integration work, or scripting skills in your resume and interviews to show you can handle the technical half of the role independently.
Get your OPT authorization in place before you start applying
TSE hiring moves fast, especially at growth-stage companies. Having your EAD in hand lets you start within two weeks of an offer, which matters to employers. Delays in authorization can cost you an offer if a company needs someone to start immediately.
Clarify the visa sponsorship timeline during the offer stage
Ask whether the company has sponsored TSEs before and what their typical H-1B visa timeline looks like. Knowing this before you accept lets you plan around the OPT expiration date and assess whether STEM OPT extension gives you enough runway to reach the next lottery cycle.
Treat certifications as a sponsorship signal, not just a resume line
AWS, GCP, Azure, or Salesforce certifications show employers you can ramp quickly on their stack. Certified candidates reduce onboarding risk, which makes it easier for hiring managers to justify the cost and process of sponsoring a work visa down the line.
Document your OPT employment to protect STEM extension eligibility
If you plan to apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, your employer must be enrolled in E-Verify and you must file Form I-983. Confirm E-Verify enrollment before accepting an offer, and keep all employment records current throughout your initial OPT period.
Technical Solutions Engineer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Technical Solutions Engineer on OPT?
Yes. TSE roles qualify under OPT because they directly apply the engineering or computer science degree most candidates hold. The role involves technical implementation, troubleshooting, and systems integration, all of which align with standard STEM degree fields. If your degree is in a STEM-designated field, you may also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after your initial 12 months.
Do Technical Solutions Engineer employers typically sponsor visas?
Many do, particularly enterprise software, cloud infrastructure, and SaaS companies that run large technical solutions or solutions engineering teams. These companies hire TSEs at scale and have established visa sponsorship processes. Smaller companies may be willing but lack the infrastructure, so it is worth asking directly about their sponsorship history. Migrate Mate filters for OPT-friendly and visa-sponsoring employers so you can focus your search effectively.
Does a TSE role qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your degree, not just the job title. If your bachelor's or master's degree is in a STEM-designated field such as computer science, information systems, or engineering, and the TSE role meaningfully applies that field, you should qualify. Your DSO will make the final determination. The role itself is inherently technical, so most TSE positions support a strong STEM OPT extension case.
What is the difference between a Technical Solutions Engineer and a Software Engineer for OPT purposes?
Both can qualify for OPT and STEM OPT extension under the same degree fields, so there is no material difference in work authorization terms. The practical distinction is that TSE roles blend technical implementation with customer-facing responsibilities, while software engineering is typically internal. Some students find TSE roles easier to land because fewer candidates apply relative to pure engineering positions, making them strategically valuable during OPT.
How do I find Technical Solutions Engineer jobs that are open to OPT students?
The challenge is that most job postings do not explicitly state OPT eligibility, so you often waste time applying to roles where sponsorship is off the table. Migrate Mate is built specifically for this, surfacing TSE and other tech roles from employers who are open to OPT candidates and have a history of visa sponsorship. Filtering by employer type and role function saves significant time compared to general job searches.
