Pharmacy Technician Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pharmacy technician in Montana?
To work as a pharmacy technician in Montana, you must register with the Montana Board of Pharmacy before beginning employment. Applicants need a high school diploma or equivalent, and registration requires a background check along with proof of training or employer sponsorship of on-the-job training. Many employers also require or strongly prefer national certification from PTCB or ExCPT. Some Montana community colleges, including Flathead Valley and Helena College, offer pharmacy technician programs that satisfy training requirements.
How much do pharmacy technicians make in Montana?
Pharmacy technicians in Montana earn a median of about $49,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,330 for the lowest 10% to over $60,780 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pharmacy technicians in Montana?
Employers hiring pharmacy technicians in Montana right now include Walgreens, CVS Health, and Albertsons, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's mix of large regional health systems and independent community pharmacies means openings appear across both clinical and retail settings statewide.
Which Montana cities have the most pharmacy technician jobs?
Billings, Missoula, and Helena account for the greatest concentration of pharmacy technician openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest city and medical hub, anchored by Billings Clinic and Benefis Health System's extensive pharmacy operations, while Missoula and Great Falls support consistent demand through their regional hospital systems, retail pharmacy chains, and growing outpatient clinic networks.
Are there remote pharmacy technician jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 8% of pharmacy technician openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on, dispensing-focused nature of most pharmacy technician work. The roles most likely to offer remote or telepharmacy components are specialty pharmacy call center positions, prior authorization support roles, and medication therapy management coordination.
How can I get hired as a pharmacy technician in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to retail pharmacy chains or independent pharmacies that offer on-the-job training and will sponsor your Montana Board of Pharmacy registration. Billings Clinic and SCL Health facilities in Montana occasionally post entry-level pharmacy technician trainee roles. Candidates moving from cashier, medical assistant, or certified nursing assistant positions have a natural advantage. Completing a pharmacy technician certificate program at a Montana community college and sitting for PTCB certification before applying significantly strengthens your application even without prior pharmacy experience.
Where can I find and apply to pharmacy technician jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to pharmacy technician jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings to see which roles match your experience level, preferred setting, and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
