Tips for Your Preschool Director Job Search
Highlight your licensing credentials upfront
State your director credential, Child Development Associate, or state-specific license in the top section of your resume. Many applicant tracking systems filter for these before a human ever reads your application, so burying them hurts your chances.
Quantify enrollment and staff numbers
Hiring committees want to know the scale you have managed. Replace vague phrases like 'led a team' with the actual number of classrooms, staff members, and enrolled children you oversaw. That specificity signals readiness for their program size.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists preschool director openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by accreditation type
NAEYC-accredited programs and Head Start grantees have different compliance expectations than private daycare chains. Target postings that match your regulatory background so your resume reads as an exact fit rather than a stretch candidate.
Prepare a program improvement story
Interviewers almost always ask what you changed at your last center and why. Rehearse a specific example covering the problem you identified, the curriculum or policy adjustment you made, and the measurable outcome for children or staff retention.
Negotiate start date around licensing transitions
If a center is mid-renewal on its state license or NAEYC accreditation, your start date affects their compliance timeline. Ask about that status during the offer stage and position your availability as a practical advantage, not just a preference.
Preschool Director Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most preschool directors?
The companies hiring the most preschool directors right now include The Goddard School, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and SPORTIME CLUBS, with the largest share of openings in California, Maryland, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Nonprofit community organizations and faith-based early learning centers consistently represent a large share of total postings nationwide.
How many preschool director jobs are remote?
About 0% of preschool director openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the on-site nature of most center leadership roles. The sub-areas most likely to offer remote arrangements are curriculum consulting, early childhood program administration for larger nonprofit networks, and regional director roles overseeing multiple centers.
How do you become a preschool director?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in early childhood education or child development, then accumulate classroom teaching experience at the preschool level. Obtain your state-required director credential, which typically involves coursework in administration, health and safety, and family engagement. Many directors also pursue credentials like the Child Development Associate or pursue NAEYC membership to strengthen their professional profile before applying to leadership roles.
Can you get hired as a preschool director with little experience?
Some centers hire candidates into assistant director roles as a pathway when full director experience is limited. Strengthening your application with a recognized director credential, documented classroom leadership, and familiarity with licensing regulations can offset a shorter management history. Smaller independent programs and newly opening centers are generally more open to candidates building their administrative experience for the first time.
What does the preschool director interview process look like?
Most preschool director interviews begin with a phone or video screening focused on your licensing background and philosophy around child development. A panel interview with the owner, board member, or regional manager typically follows, covering staff management scenarios, family communication approaches, and budget familiarity. Some centers also ask candidates to tour the facility and respond to a real-time operational situation before a final offer is extended.
Where can I find and apply to preschool director jobs?
You can find and apply to preschool director jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your credentials, experience level, and location preference, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
